Commuter Alert: Major Route 17 Northbound Ramp in Paramus Face Weeks of Overnight Closures
the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Paramus NJ, If your late-night or early-morning commute takes you through Paramus, it is time to plan a detour. The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has announced consecutive overnight closures for a heavily trafficked Bergen County artery.
The Route 17 northbound ramp from Century Road will close during overnight hours from Monday through Thursday nights. The disruption is expected to last for several weeks as crews execute critical sidewalk infrastructure repairs and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance upgrades.
Closure Schedule and Impact Window
The maintenance schedule is underway and tentatively set to run through Tuesday, July 21. However, transportation officials warn that inclement weather or unexpected construction hurdles could extend the project window.
-
Timing: Monday through Thursday nights only.
-
Hours: Closures begin at 10:00 p.m. and wrap up by 5:00 a.m. the following morning.
-
Who Is Affected: Drivers attempting to access Route 17 North from Century Road, as well as motorists traveling on Route 17 South who rely on the Century Road intersection to execute U-turns.
Official NJDOT Detour Routes
To minimize traffic delays through the Paramus corridor, state officials have mapped out two distinct detour routes for the duration of the project:
1. Century Road to Route 17 Northbound
-
Motorists looking to access the northbound ramp will be redirected onto North Fairview Avenue.
-
From there, make a right turn onto Carlough Drive, which funnels directly back onto Route 17 Northbound.
2. Route 17 Southbound to Route 17 Northbound (U-Turn Detour)
-
Drivers seeking to make a U-turn at Century Road will be instructed to take the exit ramp toward Century Road / River Edge / Fair Lawn.
-
Bear left toward Route 17 North / River Edge.
-
Stay right to continue straight onto Century Road.
-
Turn right onto North Fairview Avenue, then turn right onto Carlough Drive to successfully merge back onto Route 17 Northbound.
Part of a $12.3 Million State Safety Initiative
This local project isn’t an isolated fix. The infrastructure work in Paramus is part of a larger, $12.3 million state-funded maintenance contract aimed at repairing concrete structures across northern and central New Jersey.
The widespread regional initiative targets infrastructure in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, Union, and Warren counties. According to the NJDOT, these preventative repairs are engineered to vastly improve rideability, elevate driver safety, and prolong the overall service life of New Jersey’s aging overpasses and roadways.
Drive safely, obey local digital message signs, and give yourself extra travel time if you are navigating Paramus after hours!
