Ridgewood NJ, In light of the recent tragedy in South Carolina,
Assemblyman Kevin J. Rooney shares a few tips to keep in mind when using ride-sharing apps like Uber and Lyft. According to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, here are the steps you can take to ensure a safe ride:
- Request your ride inside – avoid spending unnecessary time outside alone with your phone in hand. Instead, wait indoors until your ride has arrived.
- Be a backseat rider – if you are riding alone, sit in the backseat. This assures you can safely exit of either side o the vehicle to avoid moving traffic.
- Share your trip details with a friend – while in route, tap “share status,” in the app to share your driver’s name, photo, license plate, and location with a trusted friend or family member.
- Protect your personal information – there’s no need to share your phone number or other contact information with your driver.
- Follow your intuition – trust your instincts and use your best judgment when riding and if you feel like you’re in an emergency situation, dial 911.
I also extend my sincerest condolences to the family of Samantha Josephson of Robbinsville, NJ. May she rest in peace.

One thing about the backseat rider tip – this poor girl was in the back seat, but the driver had the child-safety locks in place so she was trapped. Do we need to advise our young people to carry a tool to break a window in case of emergency? They are sold online, $10-$15 or so.
