Josh Gottheimer and Peter King Press “Doomsday Plan” For Hudson Tunnel Failure

NEW YORK NJ, Today, U.S. Congressmen Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05) and Peter King (NY-02) introduced a new bipartisan bill demanding a contingency plan for the “Doomsday” scenario if one, or both, of the two North River Tunnels is shut down beneath the Hudson River. They also stressed the immediate need for the Gateway Tunnel.

The North River Tunnel tracks carry 200,000 travelers daily and are crumbling after damage from more than 100 years of use and flooding during Superstorm Sandy. Last week, the Regional Plan Association released “A Preventable Crisis,” a report outlining the catastrophic economic consequences of a tunnel being shut down.

400th Anniversary Commemorating the First Documented Arrival of Africans in Colonial America

New Bridge Landing NJ, August 2019 marks the 400-year anniversary of the documented arrival of the first Africans arriving in colonial English America. Dr. Evelyn McDowell and Camile Amadio will discuss one of the women captives, Angela, and lead into a presentation about women, quilting, and slavery. We will briefly review the history of early colonial quilting and discuss the significance of quilting in the African-American community. We will end our talk with a discussion of the 400-year Commemoration Quilt Project currently underway and sponsored by Sons & Daughters of the United States Middle Passage. We will leave time for a hands-on demonstration of the block used for the commemorative quilting project. The talk begins at 1:30 pm in the Steuben House. The whole museum site is open for tours.

PLEASE NOTE: The annual school election on Tuesday, April 16 falls during Spring Recess for the Ridgewood Public Schools. Schools will be closed but polls will be open from 6 a.m.- 8 p.m. Or, VOTE BY MAIL! It’s easy! Just send in the application form to the Bergen County Clerk by Tuesday, April 9.

Democrats on the Hill Vote in Favor of Non Citizen Voting

Washington DC, House Democrats voted Friday to defend localities that allow illegal immigrants to vote in their elections, turning back a GOP attempt to discourage the practice.The vote marks a stunning reversal from just six months ago, when the then GOP controlled chamber voted against illegal immigrant voting.

The 228-197 vote came as part of a broader debate on Democrats’ major legislative priority this year, HR 1, the “For the People Act,” which includes historic expansions of voter registration and access to illegal aliens , as well as a major rewrite of campaign finance laws.
The measure however will have had no practical effect even if it had passed. Illegal immigrants and indeed noncitizens as a whole are not legally able to participate in federal elections.

Stop the Madness. No More Throwing Taxpayer Money in the Street

Ridgewood NJ, After seeing salt covering New Jersey roads today, despite the fact that temperature is not supposed to drop below 37 degrees Fahrenheit over the next few days, Senator Declan O’Scanlon (R-Monmouth) said that “enough is enough” and demanded that the State put an end to the practice of unnecessary brining.

“It’s time for someone to challenge Governor Murphy’s assertion that this is a pennies per mile cost: it’s not. There was simply no way that a .17 per mile number was an accurate reflection of the cost to brine our roads when you account for labor, gas, and equipment. After speaking with a few of local officials we were able to confirm that the actual cost in totality is in excess of $12 or $13 per mile locally – and that is for areas that are more conservative with their usage of salt and brine,” O’Scanlon said.

Bill Allowing State Lottery Winners to Remain “Anonymous” Clears Assembly Panel

Ridgewood NJ, To protect the safety of lucky New Jerseyans who win the lottery, Assemblyman John Burzichelli sponsored legislation allowing for winners of the State Lottery to remain anonymous. The bill cleared the Assembly Tourism, Gaming and the Arts Committee Thursday.

“While winning the lottery is a dream come true for those lucky individuals who are able to call themselves winners, they are sometimes hounded and harassed as a result of their newfound wealth and fame,” said Burzichelli (D-Cumberland, Gloucester, Salem). “In some cases, lottery prizes have resulted in winners being robbed and even killed, such as in places like Chicago, Georgia and West Virginia. If a lottery winner wishes to remain anonymous, they should have the right to not have their information publicly distributed.”

Ridgewood NJ, Each year the EPA releases pollution data to help inform the public on how to get that pollution reduced. In 2017, nearly 6 million pounds of toxins were released into the New Jersey air as the state’s 9 million residents breathed it in, keeping the state among the country’s worst polluters. This is especially dangerous to residents all across the state who are already overburdened by pollution and continue to choke on dirty air. Many of the toxic chemicals emitted into our air, water and land are carcinogens, damaging our health and environment.

New Jersey Can’t Tax Its Way to Prosperity

The following editorial by Senator Declan O’Scanlon (R-Monmouth) was published by the Asbury Park Press on March 6, 2019:

Gov. Phil Murphy’s second annual budget message to a joint session of the state Legislature this week outlined his plans to raise taxes, unnecessarily, yet again.

Absent from his message was any mention of support for “Path to Progress” reforms recommended by the Legislature’s bipartisan Economic and Fiscal Policy Workgroup, which have the potential to significantly lower the cost of New Jersey’s many layers of government.

That absence was especially noticeable considering Murphy’s prior chairmanship of the Benefits Review Task Force under Acting Gov. Richard Codey. The task force, under Murphy’s leadership, examined the state’s significant fiscal challenges and proposed bold reforms.

New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants Issues Ominous Warning on Governor Murphy’s Proposed FY2020 Budget

The headlines are bleak and all too familiar:

“New Jersey’s Budget Mess is Getting Even Worse” (March 4, 2019, Bloomberg)
“New Jersey Governor Again Seeks Higher Taxes on Wealthy” (March 4, 2019, Wall Street Journal)
“On the budget, Governor Murphy’s not being fair to the English language” (March 5, 2019, NJ.com)

The message is clear: New Jersey is facing a fiscal crisis, and we are not committing ourselves to the difficult decisions that will put the state on sound financial footing. While the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants (NJCPA) commends Governor Murphy for addressing issues such as health care spending, high property taxes and the growth of small businesses in his budget presentation, there’s more work to be done.

Toms River NJ, News 12 New Jersey is reporting that the mayor of a Jersey Shore community says that paying seasonal workers $15 per hour as minimum wage will hurt the town and drive up prices.While New Jersey’s economically challenged Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation earlier this year to increase the minimum wage to $15 per hour over the course of the next five years. The governor has said that a higher minimum wage will strengthen the middle class and give security to working families. The reality is middle class families try to send their kids to collage or trade school so they don’t have to work for minimum wage . The minimum wage is for starter jobs and part time jobs raising the bar eliminates those jobs , skills and work ethic that go along with them .
