Marijuana Legalization Is “Deal with the Devil”

Ridgewood NJ, Senator Michael Doherty (R-23) is voting “no” on legislation to legalize the recreational use of marijuana in New Jersey, saying the proposal represents “a deal with the devil” that will sacrifice children and communities for short-term political gain.

Doherty made his comments as the Senate Judiciary Committee began consideration of S-2703, which would legalize the recreational use of cannabis by adults.

Democrats Turn on Israel

Ridgewood NJ, Recent polls indicate Democrats are becoming more comfortable holding a skeptical view of Israel. A poll by YouGov for the Economist said just a quarter of Democrats see Israel as an ally, compared to 57 percent of Republicans.

One Democratic House candidate has pledged that she will vote against bills that include aid to Israel, denouncing what she saw as the “injustice” of Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians. Another wrote that “Israel has hypnotized the world” with its “evil doings.”Still another helped write a scathing book on relations between the United States and Israel, while Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a progressive political star expected to win a House seat in New York, condemned the “occupation of Palestine.”

Teaneck Man Charged With Embezzlement from an Employee Retirement Plan

Teaneck NJ, The trustee of a pension fund has been indicted for embezzling from an employee benefits plan and failing to file annual reports for the plan, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced today.

Howard Preschel, 62, of Teaneck, New Jersey, is charged by indictment with 10 counts of embezzlement from an employee benefit plan and three counts of failure to file an annual report. He surrendered on March 12, 2019, and made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge James C. Clark III. Preschel was released on $100,000 unsecured bond.

The vote on the 2019-2020 school budget is Tuesday, April 16, during Spring Recess for the Ridgewood Public Schools. Any registered voter may vote by mail! Please consider doing so, especially if you are unable to get to the polls on School Election Day.

Public presentations on the 2019-2020 school budget have been planned, as follows:

Monday, March 18 at George Washington Middle School auditorium at 7 p.m.

Tuesday, March 19 at Benjamin Franklin Middle School auditorium at 7 p.m.

” We’re talking about what was some of the most exclusive real estate in the village, which from August through December was restricted for use solely by the RHS football team and the marching band, and when the grass was damp, even the marching band was kicked off (while the football team and its opponent enthusiastically chewed up the field to within an inch of its life). After Christmas and New Year’s, during the late winter and early spring, literally everyone was banned from using the field so that it could recover from the yearly fall trampling. Of course, this allowed the field to be re-seeded, fertilized, watered, and otherwise expensively pampered in preparation for the famous RHS graduation ceremony. By late June, the grass was admittedly beautiful, and certainly soft beneath the feet of girl graduates in their flowing white dresses who, in accordance with decades of tradition, tended to take off their shoes during the ceremony. That said, net-net, making the RHS football field a multi-use field by turfing it was a good decision. So many more students and other people have now had the benefit of its use, it’s not even a close question. “

Bill to Modernize and Standardize Bidding Procedures for Public Works Projects Passes NJ Senate

Trenton NJ, Bipartisan legislation sponsored by Senator Steven Oroho (R-24) to update and streamline the electronic bidding process for public works projects of significant value passed the New Jersey Senate.

The “Electronic Bidding Construction Act” applies to entities subject to the “Public School Contracts Law,” the “State College Contracts Law,” and the “Local Public Contracts Law.”

New Jersey State Review Board for Historic Sites approves the Zabriskie-Schedler house for the state and national registers

Applications are typically prepared by individuals, cultural or historical organizations, government agencies, and professional consultants. Completed applications are submitted to the Historic Preservation Office where a staff member reviews and evaluates them for eligibility, technical completeness, and substantive sufficiency. Property owners and county and local officials are notified and given an opportunity to comment, and a public meeting is held for large historic districts.

Former New Jersey Priest Accused of Sexual Abuse Found Shot to Death

Ridgewood NJ, On Saturday, John Capparelli a former Ridgewood priest was found fatally shot in his home in Nevada, and the authorities there said that his death was being investigated as a homicide.The former New Jersey priest was shot dead in his Nevada home just a month after his name appeared on a list of Garden State priests credibly accused of sexual abuse, authorities said. Allegations of sexual abuse trailed John Capparelli, a former priest, for decades, resurfacing in the years after the Archdiocese of Newark removed him from ministry.

Murphy’s Budget Proposal Does Not Help Middle Class

Trenton NJ, Gov. Phil Murph’s budget proposed fiscal year 2020 budget will do nothing to help the middle class and will likely do more to harm the state’s economy said Assemblywoman BettyLou DeCroce (R- Morris, Essex Passaic).

DeCroce said the governor’s plan to increase spending and taxes and broadening programs, such free county college tuition, will not reduce property taxes — the number one issue for the middle class in New Jersey.

“The governor says repeatedly he wants to help the middle class, but he actions do not back up his statements,” said DeCroce

“The governor wants the state to spend more money; he wants to expand programs and increase school funding. But the state cannot afford the programs it has now, so how is increasing taxes and spending more money help the middle class?” asked DeCroce.

Ranking Republican on Senate Judiciary Committee says Pot deal is a “shameful abdication of our duty to protect public health and safety”

Trenton NJ, Senator Gerald Cardinale (R-39) released the following statement in response to news that Governor Phil Murphy and Legislative leaders have reached a deal on legalizing marijuana for recreational use.

Senator Cardinale has been one of the Legislature’s most vocal opponents of the bill. In November, he testified before the Budget Committee in opposition to the legislation. He also released an expansive data book containing peer-reviewed studies that demonstrate the dangers of legalizing marijuana for recreational use.
