About A Mano
A Mano, meaning “by hand,” is focused on presenting the ultimate combination of authentic ingredients and techniques to create an unmatched Neapolitan experience. The restaurant has gone to great lengths to ensure the quality and authenticity of the craft of traditional Neapolitan foods, with results that speak mouthwatering volumes in every bite.

A Mano is one of only three restaurants in the United States certified by both Italian governing associations, the Verace Pizza Napoletana and Associazone Pizzaiuoli Napoletani, to offer authentic Neapolitan Pizza. The exacting standards are what stand A Mano apart from the rest, from the expertise of the pizzaiolo (the specially-trained pizza chef) to the use of ingredients imported from Naples (from all natural Caputo flour to the San Marzano tomatoes, grown in the foothills of Mt Vesuvio). Add-in fresh mozzarella made by hand daily, along with outrageous homemade gelato and desserts, and the true concept of artisan foods are revealed.

Down to the tiles and equipment from floor to ceiling, the restaurant’s entire makeup is imported from Italy. Its twin domed ovens with round chimneys, hand-built on site by Neapolitan Artisans using stones and volcanic soil from Naples, are the centerpiece of the restaurant, stretching to the ceiling of the two-story dining room. The architecture of the wood-fired ovens allow them to reach temperatures of 1,000 degrees, creating beautifully blistering, bubbling pizza in less than two minutes.

A Mano is located at 24 Franklin Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ 07450. Hours of operation are: Monday through Thursday, 11:30 AM–10:00 PM, Friday and Saturday 11:30 AM-11:00 PM and Sunday 12:30 PM–10:00 PM. For more information, please call 201.493.2000 or visit www.amanopizza.com.

Biometric Database of All Adult Americans Hidden in Immigration Reform

Biometric Database of All Adult Americans Hidden in Immigration Reform
By David Kravets

The immigration reform measure the Senate began debating yesterday would create a national biometric database of virtually every adult in the U.S., in what privacy groups fear could be the first step to a ubiquitous national identification system.

Buried in the more than 800 pages of the bipartisan legislation (.pdf)  is language mandating the creation of the innocuously-named “photo tool,” a massive federal database administered by the Department of Homeland Security and containing names, ages, Social Security numbers and photographs of everyone in the country with a driver’s license or other state-issued photo ID.

Amnesty Would Cost Taxpayers $6.3 Trillion
Amy Payne
May 7, 2013 at 7:34 am

What is the goal of immigration reform?

As Heritage President Jim DeMint put it yesterday, “Any immigration reform should improve the lives, the incomes, and the opportunities” of those who are lawfully in America.

The Gang of Eight’s amnesty proposal does the opposite by burdening taxpayers with supporting unlawful immigrants. The Heritage Foundation’s new report estimates that an amnesty like the Gang of Eight’s bill would cost U.S. taxpayers $6.3 trillion.

“We’re advocating on behalf of those who have come here lawfully and all American taxpayers—this is going to be a huge cost to them, and it will diminish opportunities in the future,” DeMint said on “Your World with Neil Cavuto” yesterday.

The $6.3 trillion number is the cost to taxpayers of supporting unlawful immigrants under amnesty, including any taxes those immigrants would pay into the system versus the amount of government benefits and services they would take out.

On an individual level, the number is just as stunning. As Heritage experts and study authors Robert Rector and Jason Richwine write, “the average adult unlawful immigrant would receive $592,000 more in government benefits over the course of his remaining lifetime than he would pay in taxes.”

Many conservatives believe that if an individual has a job and works hard, he will inevitably be a net tax contributor (paying more in taxes than he takes in benefits). In our society, this has not been true for a very long time.

With amnesty, unlawful immigrants would become lawful—and become eligible for Obamacare benefits, Social Security, welfare, and Medicare. Rector and Richwine’s study addresses the costs as they would accrue after the Gang of Eight’s waiting period for benefits:

After 13 years, unlawful immigrants would become eligible for means-tested welfare and Obamacare. At that point or shortly thereafter, former unlawful immigrant households would likely begin to receive government benefits at the same rate as lawful immigrant households of the same education level. As a result, government spending and fiscal deficits would increase dramatically.

This isn’t the only way to reform immigration. As DeMint and Rector write in The Washington Post, “A properly structured lawful immigration system holds the potential to drive positive economic growth and job creation. But amnesty for those here unlawfully is not necessary to capture those benefits.”

It is a “false choice,” DeMint said, for people to say that amnesty is necessary to immigration reform.

The American people deserve to hear all sides of this debate—they don’t deserve a gang of Senators pushing through an Obamacare-style bill in the back rooms of Washington.

“Let’s unite the American people by doing this in public, one piece at a time,” DeMint said. “You don’t have to do the amnesty to get all the benefits of reform.”

CHRISTIE ADMINISTRATION ANNOUNCES ENHANCEMENTS TO 7TH AVENUE CONCOURSE AT NEW YORK PENN STATION

New upgrades to enhance customer experience
May 6, 2013
NJT-13-029

NEWARK, NJ — As part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to improve the customer experience, NJ TRANSIT today announced that new technology upgrades have been implemented in the 7th Avenue Concourse at New York Penn Station, featuring an improved sound system, larger monitors and a multi-color destination display that will enable customers to see at a glance the next train destined for their particular station.

“As the busiest rail station in our public transportation network, we understand the challenges that navigating New York Penn Station can present to our customers,” said NJ TRANSIT Executive Director James Weinstein.  “Led by our Scorecard initiative to enhance the overall customer experience, we are committed to making the necessary investments to modernize our customer communication systems and enable customers to more easily determine when and where their train is departing.”

To make it easier for customers to identify their train, the 7th Avenue Concourse ticketing area now features a new destination display—eight monitors installed side-by-side that show an alphabetical list of destinations by station, along with the departure time for the next train headed to that station, track number, rail line and transfer station, where required.

In addition to the new destination displays, NJ TRANSIT added two large customer information displays at the 31st Street entrance and the 32nd Street entrance to the ticketing area.

As part of this project, NJ TRANSIT also replaced all of the existing 40-inch monitors in the 7th Avenue Concourse with new 55-inch monitors to improve visibility for customers, showing color-coding by train line.  NJ TRANSIT relocated the monitors throughout the 7th Avenue Concourse to allow better flow of customer traffic during peak periods.

The project also included:

Improved adaptive audio system in the 7th Avenue Concourse that adjusts the volume level of announcements based on the ambient noise in the station.
Wireless microphones for Customer Service representatives to make announcements from the concourse floor when needed.

Located in Midtown Manhattan, New York Penn Station is the largest-volume passenger terminal in the NJ TRANSIT rail system, serving more than 150,000 customer trips on a typical weekday

Congressional Democrats on Sunday distanced themselves from the Obama administration’s explanation of the Benghazi

Congressional Democrats on Sunday distanced themselves from the Obama administration’s explanation of the Benghazi, Libya, attacks in the immediate aftermath of the fatal strikes, amid mounting evidence that suggests the information was revised to intentionally mislead Americans.

The original explanation of the Sept. 11, 2012, attacks on the U.S. outpost in Benghazi, Libya, was written by CIA officials, then revised by State Department and White House officials, according to news reports and witness testimony made available to Fox News.

Removed from the CIA’s so-called talking points were references to “Islamic extremists” and Al Qaeda in Libya. And five days later, Susan Rice, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, made the Sunday talk show rounds to say the attacks were “demonstrations” sparked by protests in Egypt over an anti-Islamic video on YouTube.

Christie Administration Pushing for Sweeping Civil Service Changes

Christie Administration Pushing for Sweeping Civil Service Changes

Rebuffed by Legislature, Christie goes for major regulatory changes through Civil Service Commission

Tired of waiting for the Democratic-controlled Legislature to send him a new civil service bill to replace the one he vetoed two years ago, Gov. Chris Christie is pushing sweeping changes through a Civil Service Commission he effectively controls.

Christie’s civil service overhaul is the latest in a series of high-profile battles with public employee unions that have defined his governorship and propelled him to national prominence. These have ranged from school vouchers and merit pay for teachers to a landmark pension and health benefits bill that not only forced public employees to pay more, but also eliminated the right of unions to bargain on health benefits for four years.

The Christie administration’s proposed civil service regulation would effectively reduce and consolidate the number of job titles by eliminating competitive examinations for promotions within broad “job bands,” giving managers greater flexibility in deciding which employees to promote.

Christie asserts that stripping away civil service restrictions will make government more efficient and thereby enable local governments to lower property taxes. But union officials say the proposed changes will substitute patronage and favoritism for merit in the promotional process.

Dog Owners: FREE Micro-chipping by NJ Federation of Dog Clubs and Ramapo Kennel Club on May 15

Dog Owners: FREE Micro-chipping by NJ Federation of Dog Clubs and Ramapo Kennel Club on May 15

Lost pets with microchips are up to 20 times more likely to return home

What exactly is a microchip?

A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and placed between your dog’s shoulder blades under a veterinarian’s supervision. Implantation is quick, easy and virtually painless — similar to a vaccine injection — and can be performed during a regular clinic visit.

A microchip is not a tracking device. It can only be “turned on” for a few seconds at a time by a handheld microchip scanner that is passed over to read the microchip’s unique encoded number. The microchip number is the only information stored in the microchip so it is very important you immediately enroll your pet’s microchip with your contact information.

By enrolling your pet’s microchip, your name, telephone numbers, emergency contacts and other vital information are linked to the microchip number and stored in American Kennel Club’s Companion Animal Recovery’s (AKC CAR) database. When a lost pet is found, AKC CAR is contacted and our recovery experts will call you to help reunite you with your pet.

The Responsible Pet Ownership Committee, along with AKC CAR, The New Jersey Federation of Dog Clubs and the Ramapo Kennel Club will be supplying free Micro-chips, implantation, and registration to the first 75 dogs who attend the May 15th clinic. This free implantation will be held in conjunction with the Village’s free rabies clinic. Dr. Sherif George Mosaad, from the Farview Animal Clinic in Paramus will be present to implant the micro-chip which is quick and painless and done with a syringe.

The clinic will be held on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the Recycling Center, East Glen Avenue, Ridgewood, and will be available for the first 75 dogs.

RIDGEWOOD — Ridgewood High School head football coach Chuck Johnson is conducting his annual Ridgewood Pee Wee and Wing-T football camps, which are sponsored by the Ridgewood Junior Football Association.

The non-contact instructional camp will be run in three different sessions for students entering grades three through 12 in September.

The Pee Wee camp for third, fourth and fifth graders is June 28-July 3 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Ridgewood High School game field. Tuition is $175 per camper.

“The purpose of this camp is to introduce young players to the offensive skills involved in football,” said Johnson, the camp director, who has been Ridgewood’s head football coach since 1984.

CHRISTIE ADMINISTRATION ANNOUNCES NJ TRANSIT CUSTOMER SATISFACTION JUMPS NEARLY 25 PERCENT

CHRISTIE ADMINISTRATION ANNOUNCES NJ TRANSIT CUSTOMER SATISFACTION JUMPS NEARLY 25 PERCENT

Results of statewide agency’s first post-Sandy survey reflect continued progress

April 9, 2013
NJT-13-030

NEWARK, NJ — Nearly four in five customers said they would recommend NJ TRANSIT to a friend or relative in the agency’s latest customer satisfaction survey, released today and available at njtransit.com.  The results mark a new high for the statewide public transit agency.

The third quarter FY13 survey was conducted online at njtransit.com between February 4 and 25.  The survey asked bus, rail, light rail and Access Link customers to rate NJ TRANSIT on a scale of 0 to 10.  Customers also considered 41 attributes of the system related to facilities, service, vehicles, communications and the overall experience using NJ TRANSIT.  In addition, customers were asked to identify the most important aspects of NJ TRANSIT service among the items they rated.

“As we near completion of the Christie Administration’s second full year of Scorecard, our customer surveys continue to provide a clear picture of what matters most to our bus, rail, light rail and Access Link customers,” said NJ TRANSIT Board Chairman and NJ Department of Transportation Commissioner James Simpson.  “Through this survey data and the agency’s quarterly ‘We Are Listening’ customer forums, NJ TRANSIT has effectively improved its operations, resulting in a 23 percent increase in customer satisfaction and further protections for New Jersey taxpayers.”

Of the approximately 415,500 customers who used NJ TRANSIT service on a typical weekday in the third quarter of FY13, NJ TRANSIT received more than 14,000 responses to the online; the highest response rate in a year.  Regarding customer loyalty, 79 percent of the customers surveyed said they would recommend NJ TRANSIT to a friend, relative or neighbor (up from 67 percent from the baseline rating).  NJ TRANSIT established the baseline with the first customer survey conducted in advance of the launch of Scorecard last year.

“Using this invaluable feedback, we are encouraged that our first, post-Sandy survey shows that our customers have recognized our efforts to enhance the customer experience – even under the most challenging of conditions,” said NJ TRANSIT Executive Director James Weinstein.  “However, the work continues, and we will continue to employ a laser-like focus on those areas identified in need of improvement.”

“By focusing on performance standards and absolute results, Scorecard continues to help NJ TRANSIT move in the right direction,” said Weinstein.

Survey Results – Third Quarter FY13

For the third quarter of FY13, customers rated their overall satisfaction with
NJ TRANSIT service as above average with a score of 6.4, very close to the agency’s FY13 goal of 6.5 for customer satisfaction.  This is an increase from the agency’s most recent score of 6.0, achieved during the first quarter of FY013 – and a substantial increase over the baseline rating of 5.2.

Current customer satisfaction ratings on NJ TRANSIT’s four service modes are as follows:

Bus customers rated their overall satisfaction with service at a 6.4, higher than the 5.5 baseline rating.  About 261,200 customers used NJ TRANSIT’s interstate and local bus system on a typical weekday during the third quarter of FY13, representing approximately 63 percent of all NJ TRANSIT customers.

Rail customers gave NJ TRANSIT an overall score of 5.9, a significant increase from the baseline score of 4.5.  Approximately 118,900 customers rode NJ TRANSIT trains on a typical weekday throughout the third quarter of FY13, comprising nearly than 29 percent of all NJ TRANSIT customers.

Light Rail customers gave NJ TRANSIT an overall satisfaction rating of 7.4, an improvement over the baseline score of 6.5.  About 32,200 customers used
NJ TRANSIT’s three light rail lines on a typical weekday in the third quarter of FY13, making up approximately eight percent of total NJ TRANSIT customers.

Access Link, NJ TRANSIT’s paratransit service for customers with disabilities, was given an overall rating of 8.1, higher than the 7.5 baseline.  Access Link serves approximately 3,200 customers on a typical weekday.

NJ TRANSIT will continue to use the survey results to target specific improvements needed to boost customer satisfaction.

“While the news today is clearly encouraging, we recognize that there are improvements which must continue to be made across our system, particularly as we continue recovering from Sandy’s unprecedented devastation.  We are rebuilding our system with the interests of our loyal customers in mind, and again, I would thank them for their continued patience and support,” said Weinstein.

Gauging Interest Chamber of Commerce’s proposal for construction and operation of at least one municipal parking garage in the Central Business District.

Candidate may write request for proposals in Ridgewood

Ridgewood officials have identified a candidate to draft a request for proposals (RFP) to develop Block 3703, Lot 12 of the municipal tax map, commonly referred to as The Gap parking lot on East Ridgewood Avenue.

The Village Council is expected to appoint Tom Calu Consultant LLC to complete the RFP for a $9,000 fee. A resolution to award the contract will be up for a vote at the April 10 council meeting.

gap_parking_theridgewoodblog.net

An RFP is needed to determine the level of interest that a developer might have in entering into a long-term land lease with the village and converting the lot into a commercial or retail building.

The request is considered the first of many steps in the Chamber of Commerce’s ambitious proposal to use proceeds and taxes from the lease to fund the construction and operation of at least one municipal parking garage in the Central Business District.

Members of Ridgewood’s business community and the Village Council have targeted space on Hudson Street as the location for a parking garage. If the land lease proves successful, a second parking garage will be considered, likely at the corner of Franklin and Walnut avenues.

Here We Go Again : Obama administration pushes banks to make home loans to people with weaker credit
By Zachary A. Goldfarb, Published: April 2

The Obama administration is engaged in a broad push to make more home loans available to people with weaker credit, an effort that officials say will help power the economic recovery but that skeptics say could open the door to the risky lending that caused the housing crash in the first place.

President Obama’s economic advisers and outside experts say the nation’s much-celebrated housing rebound is leaving too many people behind, including young people looking to buy their first homes and individuals with credit records weakened by the recession.

Generation Mooch? Why 20-somethings have a hard time paying for content
By Eliza Kern
Mar. 29, 2013 – 8:00 AM EDT

I distinctly remember learning how to read, and it wasn’t from a book or in a kindergarten classroom.

It was sitting at the breakfast table with my Dad every morning, when we would read the weather section of the Washington Post. We checked to see if it was hot in Arizona (it usually was) and cold in Canada (it always was). For this reason I’ve always felt an affection for the DC-area newspaper, and I continue to read some of its blogs and politics coverage to this day. But when the newspaper rolls out a paywall this summer, it’s doubtful I’ll start paying for access. I can still log in using my parents’ subscription, but if they stop paying? I might owe that newspaper my literacy, but with the rest of the internet at my fingertips, it’s still not enough to get me to pay.

There was an excellent post on Buzzfeed earlier this week about HBO Go passwords, in which John Herrman surveyed everyone in his office and asked how most of them access HBO, a content provider that only gives digital access to cable subscribers. The responses evoked a trend I see among my own 20-something friends, which is that hardly anyone actually subscribes to HBO.

The anecdote struck me as one that perfectly illustrates how much of my generation is building habits around digital content and what exactly we’re willing to pay for. We’ve grown up with a wealth of news and video available for free on the internet, and for many of us, we also have access to high-quality content through parents or friends with subscriptions to services like Netflix or the New York Times. We built media habits around this content from an early age, but we were never forced to actually pay for content.
