Westwood NJ, in a Facebook post Senator Holly Schepisi commented on the crime wave impacting Bergen County , “There are some who criticize me posting on this page that there is a significant increase in certain property crimes in Bergen County. Well today I met directly with the Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella. In just the month of January there was an 83% increase in car thefts from the previous January. In that one month alone there were 132 thefts and this number continues to increase with every passing day. Towns with the greatest number of thefts in Bergen are Paramus with 16, Fort Lee with 9, Ridgewood, Rutherford and Garfield with 6 each, Bergenfield, Englewood, Teaneck and Hackensack with 5 each, Franklin Lakes, Lodi, Englewood Cliffs, Upper Saddle River and Tenafly with 4 each, and River Vale, Saddle Brook, East Rutherford, Elmwood Park, Washington Township, North Arlington, Oradell, Cliffside Park, Hasbrouck Heights and Moonachie with 3 each.”

The Senator went on , “These numbers DO NOT include attempted thefts or any reported thefts from February or March. Most of these thefts are taking place in people’s own driveways and are occurring during daylight hours. Some of these thefts have occurred as people are putting groceries into their homes or getting ready to bring their kids to school. I know many of us take for granted our safety and security in our own driveways but 1. Never leave your car running even for one minute if you aren’t in it, 2. Never leave your key fob in your car even if it is inside your garage, 3. Never leave your purse or any valuables in your vehicle, 4. Do Not leave your garage door open and 5. Be alert. If you get rear ended late at night and no one is around, put your hazards on and drive directly to the nearest police station for assistance.”

  1. No coincidence here.
As soon as the Police were prohibited from chasing car thieves, the activity increased by the criminals because they KNOW that they can get away with the crime!

    1. Do you want to see high speed car chases throughout our small crowded towns. That will only lead to more people being injured and even killed.

  2. And suggesting good proactive policing did a lot of good for the former Chief in Wyckoff.
