Washington DC, A massive political shift is sweeping through Central and South America, signaling what experts are calling a monumental shift toward free-market capitalism and the U.S. economic model.

With Colombia and Peru joining the movement following recent election results, seven nations in the region have swung politically to the right in just the last 18 months—a geopolitical phenomenon increasingly referred to as the “Trump Trend.”

Argentine President Javier Milei, who ignited this regional shift with his historic November 2023 victory and subsequent aggressive free-market reforms, has boldly labeled the movement:

“…the biggest repudiation of socialism that Latin America has ever seen.”

The New Power Players: Big Wins in Peru and Colombia

The momentum accelerated dramatically this month as two of South America’s largest economies replaced left-wing leadership with conservative, business-friendly administrations.

🇵🇪 Peru: Unlocking Natural Resources

In Peru (population: 35 million), 51-year-old conservative Keiko Fujimori secured a narrow runoff victory by 41,000 votes. Fujimori’s platform focused heavily on:

  • Developing the nation’s untapped mineral rights.

  • Cutting bureaucratic red tape to open up the local economy to foreign investment.

🇨🇴 Colombia: Substantial Government Downsizing

In Colombia (population: 54 million), prominent businessman Abelardo De La Espriella won Sunday’s highly contested runoff against leftist challenger Ivan Cepeda. Cepeda, a protégé of outgoing left-wing President Gustavo Petro, had campaigned on empowering public sector unions and placing a moratorium on new oil projects.

In stark contrast, De La Espriella has pledged a sweeping overhaul of the Colombian state, promising to:

  • Slash overall government spending by 40%.

  • Eliminate nine federal ministries.

  • Reduce the state payroll by firing 700,000 public workers.

  • Restore economic freedom and drilling incentives for fossil-fuel producers.

  • Implement deep, broad-based tax cuts.

Timeline of the Free-Market Revolution

According to data from polling firm Latinobarómetro, more Latin Americans now identify with the political right than at any point over the last two decades. The dominoes have fallen rapidly across the Americas:

  • 2023: Argentina

  • 2025: Ecuador, Bolivia, Honduras, Chile

  • 2026: Costa Rica, Peru, Colombia

Who is Next?

All eyes now turn to Brazil. Latin American analysts suggest that Brazil could be the next major domino to fall if 80-year-old leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva loses his upcoming re-election bid this October.
