Ridgewood NJ, Elon Musk announced on Thursday that SpaceX has achieved breakeven cash flow. It is unclear whether the milestone was hit on an operating basis or for a specific time period. SpaceX’s valuation is now at around $150 billion. Musk is considering spinning off Starlink and making it public through an initial public offering likely after 2025.
SpaceX’s Starlink is a satellite internet constellation project that aims to provide high-speed, low-latency internet access to underserved and remote areas around the world. The project involves launching thousands of small satellites into low Earth orbit (LEO) to create a network of interconnected satellites that can beam internet signals down to Earth.
Key features of SpaceX’s Starlink project include:
- Global Coverage: Starlink intends to provide internet access to virtually every corner of the planet, including rural and remote areas that are currently underserved or lacking reliable internet connectivity.
- Low Earth Orbit: The Starlink satellites are positioned in low Earth orbit, typically around 340 kilometers (211 miles) to 1,200 kilometers (746 miles) above the Earth’s surface. This low orbit reduces latency (signal delay) and allows for faster data transmission compared to traditional geostationary satellites.
- High Throughput: Starlink satellites are designed to provide high data throughput, enabling users to access the internet at broadband speeds, even in remote locations.
- Low-Cost Terminals: SpaceX aims to make user terminals (dishes and modems) affordable, allowing a broad range of users to access the service. These user terminals are designed to be easy to set up and use.
- Expanding Constellation: As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, SpaceX had launched thousands of Starlink satellites, with plans to deploy tens of thousands more over the coming years. This expanding constellation is expected to improve coverage and capacity.
- Competitive Pricing: SpaceX aims to provide competitive pricing for its Starlink service, making it a viable option for consumers and businesses in both developed and underserved regions.
- Beta Service: Starlink began offering a public beta service called “Better Than Nothing Beta” to customers in select regions. The service has been gradually expanding to more areas as the satellite constellation grows.
Starlink has the potential to revolutionize internet access in rural and remote areas, as well as in places where traditional internet infrastructure is challenging to deploy. It can also be used for emergency and disaster relief, providing connectivity when terrestrial infrastructure is disrupted.

Cool, when he goes public, can we get all the government subsidies back?
