The Secret History of the Shell: A Legacy of Father and Son
While thousands of residents enjoy the facility every year, few know the deeply moving story behind its creation. Built in 1958, the structural landmark is a living monument to two iconic Ridgewood residents: Frank and Howard Kasschau.
The Orpheus Club Connection
Frank Kasschau was the early leader of the Orpheus Club, a prestigious local men’s chorus founded in 1909 by half a dozen local businessmen. Under Frank’s dramatic leadership, the club grew into a powerhouse of the North Jersey musical community.
In April 1943, Frank passed the baton to his talented son, Howard Kasschau. Tragically, Frank passed away just a year later in 1944.
How the Community Built a Landmark
Determined to honor Frank’s immense impact on the village, the Ridgewood Choral formed a memorial committee in 1946. Rather than a standard indoor auditorium, they envisioned an grand, open-air shell.
To fund it, they turned to the power of music:
-
In 1947, Metropolitan Opera soprano Helen Jepson donated her incredible talents for a benefit concert out of friendship for the Kasschaus.
-
In 1949, the very first outdoor “Pop Concert” drew 2,500 enthusiastic attendees, establishing a June tradition that generated massive community funding year after year.
Ultimately, the concrete, steel, and stucco facility was designed by local architect Wallace Dunlop and officially gifted to the village. Boasting a massive proscenium arch 50 feet wide by 23 feet high and a deep, curved apron, it remains one of the largest and finest outdoor stages in Northern New Jersey.
A Living Tradition That Endures
The Kasschau Memorial Shell was officially dedicated on June 17, 1958, with a joint performance by the Ridgewood Choral and the Orpheus Club. Over the decades, its stage has welcomed everything from elite ballet companies and bluegrass banjo groups to traditional ethnic cultural ensembles.
Today, the shell’s pristine condition and high-tech sound systems are meticulously prepped and maintained by the village’s own Traffic & Signal Division—acting as the community’s premium handymen.
Though Frank passed in 1944 and Howard in 1994, their musical heartbeat lives on. Every time a guitar strings a chord or a vocalist hits a high note under the Ridgewood night sky, the legacy of the Kasschau family continues.
See You on June 4th! Don’t miss the opening night of the 2026 season. Check back here or monitor the village committee updates for weekly performer announcements! What kind of music are you hoping to hear at the shell this summer? Let us know in the comments!
