President has “Tawana Brawley” moment
Tawana Brawley rape allegations
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tawana Brawley (born 1972) is an African-American woman from Wappingers Falls, New York. In 1987, at the age of 15, she received national media attention in the United States for falsely accusing six white men, some of whom were police officers, of having raped her. The accusations soon earned her notoriety, which was inflamed by Brawley’s advisers (including the Reverend Al Sharpton and attorneys Alton H. Maddox and C. Vernon Mason), the statements of various public officials, and intense media attention.[1] After hearing evidence, a grand jury concluded in October 1988 that Brawley had not been the victim of a forcible sexual assault and that she herself may have created the appearance of an attack.[2] The New York prosecutor whom Brawley had accused as one of her alleged assailants successfully sued Brawley and her three advisers for defamation.[3]
Brawley initially received considerable support from the African-American community.[4] Some scholars suggested that Brawley was victimized by biased reporting that adhered to racial stereotypes.[5][6] The mainstream media’s coverage drew heated criticism from the African-American press and leaders for its treatment of the teenager.[7] The grand jury’s conclusions decreased support for Brawley and her advisers. Brawley’s family has maintained that the allegations were true.

Obama urges nation to grapple with race
David Jackson, USA TODAY 5:12 p.m. EDT July 19, 2013
President Obama said Friday that all Americans should respect a jury’s acquittal of George Zimmerman in the killing of Trayvon Martin, but white Americans should also understand that African Americans are pained by Trayvon’s death and continue to face racial discrimination.
“Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago,” the nation’s first African-American president said during a surprise appearance in the White House briefing room.
Obama, who last year said the 17-year-old Florida shooting victim could just as easily have been his son, talked about how he has been subjected to casual prejudice. He also said African Americans need to address the problems of violence in their own communities.
African-American males know they are more likely to be both “victims and perpetrators of violence,” Obama said, and “somebody like Trayvon Martin was probably statistically more likely to be shot by a peer than he was by somebody else.”
The problem is that so many people paint with a “broad brush” and see all black young men as potential criminals, Obama said.

Twanna Brawley? That has absolutely nothing to do with what the president said. Listen with your ears.
The President was right on point. His talk was honest and nonpartisan and I like and admire him all the more for what he said.
the jury didn’t think so neither did the facts of the case
Is this Six Degress of Separation? Obama had nothing to do with Brawley. Someone pieced together a few unrelated news clips and thinks that they made a point.
The President doubled-down on his ‘My (fictional) son could have been Trayvon’ to ‘I WAS Trayvon 35 years ago’. His parties in the “choom wagon” from his mis-spent youth must have given him this idea. He further degraded the office with race-baiting and wagging his bony finger. While we have come to expect charlatans like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, I’d never expect the President to comment on the verdict of a trial as well as playing the race card. This man further embarrasses our country and the office he holds. We got exactly who the majority we voted for: a man clearly not ready for the huge responsibility and decorum for the office.
#5, you are so wrong it is pitiful. You sound extremely racist. President Obama was not playing a race card. He was explaining honestly, to those who would listen with an open mind, the facts about racism as it exists in the country. He also offered some positive suggestions to help our country eventually move away from this. Black mothers and fathers spend their lives worrying that their sons will be shot. This is an ongoing nightmare for them, and sadly it is a reality in many cases.
Thank God we have an eloquent, compassionate man in office who is clearly up to the huge responsibility of the Office of President, and who has more decorum than several previous presidents. He is truly a class act.
His talk last night was phenomenal.
#6, I find that you are horribly blind to president Obama’s pathological and narcissistic need to interject himself into every cultural event of any size or importance in this country in order to serve his statist agenda. You sound extremely credulous, but more likely than not, you are on Obama’s payroll in some way. Either you say what you say for financial gain, or, perhaps more likely, for the copious psychological income you receive for frustrating the aims of a common political enemy, namely, those of us who wish to live in a nation of laws and not of men. The notion that one would thank G*d Obama is our _resident is particularly ironic and odious when one considers the obvious glee with which he denigrates on an almost daily basis our rich national heritage in religious faith. For you to say that Obama is a class act drains almost all meaning from such words. Furthermore, any speech he gives at this point is an exercise in pantomime. He simply has no credibility left among citizens who prize rationality in public discourse and integrity in those we elect to political office.
Obama’s comments were beneath the office of the presidency. I don’t care if you agree or disagree with him. He should have known better.
May I suggest “Outrage: The Story Behind the Tawana Brawley Hoax” by McFadden et al, 1990. The key word being “hoax” and proven by six NYTimes reporters. Al Sharpton is a huxter, fraud and liar.
