WASHINGTON, D.C. — Chaos erupted at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night as President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and nearly the entire U.S. Cabinet were rushed to safety following a shooting in the hotel lobby. The incident, which occurred just as the first course of the annual “Nerd Prom” was being served, marks one of the most significant security breaches in the event’s 100-year history.

Gunfire Near Security Checkpoint Sparks Panic

At approximately 8:40 p.m., three to four loud bangs echoed through the lobby area of the Washington Hilton. According to Secret Service officials, the shooter opened fire near the main magnetometer screening area—the final security line guests must pass through to enter the ballroom.

The ballroom, packed with over 2,600 journalists, celebrities, and high-ranking officials, immediately fell into disorder. Witnesses described a harrowing scene:

  • Emergency Evacuation: Secret Service agents swarmed the head table, whisking the President and First Lady out of the room.

  • Shelter in Place: Reporters and guests dove under tables, seeking cover behind linens as security teams with rifles took positions on the dais.

  • Immediate Response: One Secret Service agent was struck in the vest during the exchange but is reported to be in good condition.

The Suspect: What We Know

The U.S. Secret Service confirmed that one individual was subdued and taken into custody shortly after the shots were fired. Law enforcement sources have identified the suspect as a 31-year-old male from California, reportedly a former “Teacher of the Month.” Authorities are currently investigating the motive behind the attack, noting the shooter was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Allen graduated from the California Institute of Technology, a prestigious private research university in Pasadena, California, in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. The school, commonly known as Caltech, confirmed it had a record of a student named Cole Allen who graduated in 2017.

The LinkedIn profile indicates he obtained his masters of science degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills in May 2025.

After graduating from Caltech, Allen worked for a year as a mechanical engineer, before becoming an independent video game developer and later also a part-time teacher at a company dedicated to helping high schoolers get into college, according to the LinkedIn profile

President Trump Reacts: “Let the Show Go On”

Initially, President Trump took to Truth Social to praise the bravery of law enforcement, suggesting he wanted the dinner to continue.

“Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely,” Trump posted. “I have recommended that we ‘LET THE SHOW GO ON’ but will be guided by Law Enforcement.”

However, per protocol, the event was officially canceled shortly after. In a follow-up statement, the President confirmed he would hold a press conference from the White House and promised the dinner would be rescheduled within 30 days.

A Grim Historical Parallel

The Washington Hilton has a dark history with presidential security. In 1981, John Hinckley Jr. attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan outside this same hotel. Saturday’s incident also follows the 2024 assassination attempt on Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, further heightening concerns over political violence in the current era.
