Westwood NJ, the Westwood Regional School District board continued its efforts to reverse policies implemented by the previous parental rights majority, taking steps this week to dismantle a policy that restricted teachers’ opinions on “controversial issues.”
In addition, the new board introduced regulations to limit the recording of teachers and school staff without their consent. Although not explicitly mentioned during Monday’s deliberation, conservative media personality James O’Keefe had previously threatened to distribute hidden cameras to students to combat what he perceived as political indoctrination within the district.
During Monday night’s session, the board voted 6-3 to explore a revised version of Westwood Regional’s policy on controversial issues, which outlines guidelines for how teachers should navigate discussions on topics not included in the approved curriculum. The proposed revision aims to undo stricter constraints imposed by the conservative majority that held sway last year.
Jay Garcia, Heather Perin, Loni Azzolina, Jorge Pertuz, Andrea Peck, and Nicole Martin cast affirmative votes, while Kristen Pedersen, Laura Cooper, and Doug Cusato—remaining members from the previous board—voiced opposition.
This decision represents the latest effort to reverse policies enacted last year, following months of impassioned board meetings and a November election that saw the defeat of four candidates associated with the parental rights movement. Additionally, the board voted during Monday’s session to rescind a parental notification requirement and reinstate privacy safeguards for transgender students.
Comprising approximately 2,800 students from Washington Township and Westwood, the K-12 district continues to navigate these policy changes in response to evolving community dynamics.

Hey voters who elected these woke candidates. Wait, you’ll see how unsafe your child will be in school with liberal teachers, with a liberal woke agenda, with a purpose of indoctrination of woke liberal policies.
voters don’t care about their kids is just kiss asrse and keep up with the Joneses
public education is OVER !, time to move on
Ridgewood is also controlled by teachers union. The majority on the board is supported by the teachers union and they “owe” their election to the union!
Thank goodness sanity is returning to schools and replacing people who repeat stuff they heard about “woke yada yada.” Teachers should be able to talk to students like they always have. The people trying to record teachers could never teach a day in their life. Mr. O’Keefe doesn’t really have a career anymore.
let the indoctrination begin , pedophiles rejoice !
