Teterboro NJ, A high-stakes situation unfolded at Teterboro Airport on Monday night when a private jet overshot the runway, leading to a temporary shutdown of one of the world’s busiest general aviation hubs.
The Incident: What Happened?
At approximately 6:27 p.m., a Learjet 60—a popular midsize business jet manufactured by Bombardier—was attempting to land on Runway 24. According to preliminary reports from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft was unable to come to a stop, veering off the left side of the runway and crashing into the Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS).
The EMAS consists of specialized concrete blocks designed to safely crush under the weight of an aircraft, providing a predictable deceleration for planes that overrun the runway.
Brake Issues and Miracle Escapes
Early findings from the Accident and Incident Notices (AIN) suggest that a “brake issue” may have been the primary cause of the skid.
Despite the dramatic nature of the crash, the outcome was incredibly fortunate:
-
Six people were on board (two crew members and four passengers).
-
Zero injuries were reported.
-
No damage was sustained by the runway itself.
Teterboro Operations & Regional Impact
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey acted swiftly, with Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting crews arriving on the scene immediately. While the airport managed to reopen by 7:30 p.m., the ripple effect on air travel was significant. The FAA reported departure delays averaging 45 minutes well into the night as the backlog of private flights cleared.
As the oldest airport in the NY/NJ area (opening in 1919), Teterboro remains a critical piece of infrastructure, handling over 75,000 private departures annually to keep commercial congestion away from Newark and JFK.
