Summit NJ, On October 6, 2024, during the 194th Semiannual General Conference, President Russell M. Nelson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints made an exciting announcement: the construction of the Summit New Jersey Temple. This marks a significant milestone, as it will be the first temple in the state of New Jersey.

With over 35,000 Latter-day Saints and more than 60 congregations spread throughout the state, the announcement brings great joy to the faithful members of the Church. Up until now, Latter-day Saints in New Jersey have traveled to nearby temples in Manhattan, New York, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to participate in sacred temple ordinances. The first missionaries arrived in New Jersey in 1832, making this temple a long-awaited blessing for local members.

President Nelson, who has announced 185 temples since 2018—more than half of all the Church’s temples—addressed the significance of this unprecedented pace of temple construction. “Why are we building temples at such an unprecedented pace?” he asked. “Because the Lord has instructed us to do so. The blessings of the temple help to gather Israel on both sides of the veil. These blessings also help to prepare a people who will help prepare the world for the Second Coming of the Lord!”

Latter-day Saints consider temples to be the most sacred places of worship, where they find peace, inspiration, and spiritual power. The primary purpose of temples is for faithful members to enter into sacred covenants with God, drawing closer to Him through holy ordinances.

The announcement of the Summit New Jersey Temple represents not only the growth of the Church in the area but also a profound opportunity for members to access these blessings in their own state.

  1. I mean, it’s stupid, but at least it’s not low-income housing.
