River Edge NJ, on March 23, 1780, British forces launched a multi-front attack across Bergen County, striking Little Ferry, Hackensack, Paramus Road, and Ridgewood before culminating at the strategic New Bridge. This event marked the beginning of the “War of Outposts,” a series of incursions into New Jersey that would eventually lead to the battles of Springfield and Connecticut Farms in June of the same year.

Why Was New Bridge So Important?

New Bridge held immense strategic value during the Revolutionary War. As the only crossing south of the Hackensack River, it was a crucial passage for all overland traffic coming out of British-occupied New York City. Recognizing its significance, the British sent the 43rd Regiment ahead to secure the bridge as they launched their assault.

The Attack Begins

In the early hours of March 23, British forces executed their plan with precision. Troops transported across the Hackensack River in small boats set the stage for a surprise offensive. The 43rd Regiment, along with 50 Anspach troops, moved swiftly through Hackensack, targeting homes, capturing militia members in their beds, and securing the town before proceeding toward Paramus and New Bridge.

A War That Was Far from Over

Although this attack was a significant moment in Bergen County’s wartime history, it was just the beginning. The northern theater of the war remained highly active, with New Jersey playing a crucial role in the Revolutionary struggle. The Bergen County Historical Society has commissioned artwork to commemorate this pivotal event, highlighting the county’s deep-rooted history as a Revolutionary War battleground.

New Bridge was more than just a crossing—it was a focal point of the American Revolution. As we remember this historic attack, we honor the resilience of the patriots who defended New Jersey’s freedom.
