Ridgewood NJ, In early March, the Ridgewood Fire Department (Platoon C) responded to what seemed like a routine “odor call” at a local business. However, upon arrival, the Captain discovered a much more serious situation: a developing smoke condition inside the building.

What the FD members found during their investigation is a mistake made in thousands of homes and businesses every day—and it almost led to a devastating fire.

The Culprit: Three Fridges, One Outlet

The investigation revealed an overloaded electrical outlet. A single wall outlet was being used to power three full-sized refrigerators via a multi-plug adapter.

Because refrigerators draw a significant amount of power, the outlet quickly overheated. The plug began to burn, melting the plastic and filling the business with smoke. Thanks to the quick response of FMBA Local 47, the hazard was neutralized before flames could break out.

The “Direct Plug” Rule: 3 Essential Reminders

The Ridgewood Professional Firefighters are using this incident as a vital teaching moment for the community. To keep your property safe, follow these non-negotiable electrical rules:

  1. Direct-to-Wall Only: Large appliances—including refrigerators, washers, dryers, and space heaters—must be plugged directly into a wall outlet.

  2. Ditch the Adapters: Never use multi-plug adapters, power strips, or extension cords for major appliances. These devices are not rated for the heavy electrical load these machines require.

  3. Respect the Inspection: Fire inspections aren’t about red tape; they are about finding “invisible” hazards like damaged wiring or overloaded circuits before they turn into life-threatening emergencies.

“A small electrical shortcut can quickly become a big emergency. We aren’t trying to be difficult—we’re looking for hazards exactly like this to keep Ridgewood safe.” — Ridgewood FD

  1. Three refrigerators on a single outlet is not a mistake, it’s cutting corners and costs.
When was the last time there was a fire inspection.
