Paramus NJ, a social media post raised alarm at Paramus High School on Friday, September 6, prompting a brief shelter-in-place order. Though the situation was resolved within minutes, with no immediate danger, the incident delayed dismissal and caused unease among parents and students.

However, by Monday, the situation escalated in southern New Jersey, where a more serious threat forced the closure of schools in two districts. Threats were made against schools in the Woodbury, Deptford, Glassboro, and Haddon Heights districts, leading Woodbury and Deptford to cancel classes for nearly 6,000 students. Glassboro and Haddon Heights remained open but heightened security by increasing police presence on campus.

Three suspects—two from Woodbury and one from Glassboro—were arrested in connection with the threats. Glassboro police issued a statement crediting community members with helping to identify the suspects. The police emphasized their commitment to protecting the students, saying, “The children that attend school in our district may not biologically be ours, but we look after them as if they are our own.”

The arrest and threat follow a wave of heightened anxiety after a tragic school shooting in Winder, Georgia, where a 14-year-old student fatally shot two classmates and two teachers. The New Jersey threats, shared widely on TikTok and local Facebook pages, heightened fears among families and educators.

Superintendents in the affected districts were quick to respond. Woodbury City School District, with over 1,700 students, issued a statement from Superintendent Andrew T. Bell Sr., assuring parents that while the threats were not deemed credible, the district was closing schools out of extreme caution. Bell added, “School safety remains our top priority, and we are taking every precaution necessary to maintain a secure environment.”

Similarly, Deptford Township’s Superintendent Kevin Kanauss echoed the concern, deciding to close schools on Monday, September 9, stating, “After carefully reviewing the progress of the investigation with our security team and law enforcement, I have decided to close schools for the safety and security of our entire Deptford Spartan Community.”

Both districts are working closely with law enforcement to investigate the source of the threats. Families have been urged to remain vigilant and report any relevant information that could assist the investigation. The swift response and community involvement underscore the importance of maintaining school safety and protecting students from potential harm.
