Time to consider the installation of safety fencing around the top deck of the Hudson Garage

Ridgewood NJ, responding to reports of juveniles congregating on the parking garage’s top level.  Recently, a report was received of juveniles hanging over the ledge on the top deck taking photos/videos.  Someone on social media reported that his employees were hit by snowballs thrown from the top deck.  Ugly as it might seem (with respect to appearance and expense), is it time to consider the installation of safety fencing around the top deck’s ledge?

  1. Nip this in the bud before a teen is seriously injured or killed. Yes, it will be hideously ugly and cost a ton, but it will be worth it in the end.

  2. Maybe start with frequent police patrols of the garage.

  3. I guess somebody really screwed up again. Yes it’s very important to make a site extremely safe. But guess what the fence is not going to stop anyone from throwing anything over it. Now we have to invest more money at this location that we will never ever see in return. How come this was looked at the Design time. Who is overlooking this job. Wasn’t safety put into play. What’s next. How about enclosing the top.

  5. “Aronsohn, Pucciarelli, and Hauck will have blood on their hands” What about the other Council members who voted for this garage ? Their just as guilty.

  6. This is what happens when a political entity attempts to run a business or manage a large building project. The people in charge, most likely, are unfamiliar with what makes the investment a good one in the long run, other than where to place the bronze plaque. As is the case with all assets, there are liabilities that attach themselves to the property. I would hope that our Village politicians and police will address this matter quickly and appropriately. And yes, this is a problem like all other Village problems, that is to be solved with your money. Oh the pain, the pain…. You voted for the White Elephant and now it seems to have changed colors to a degree. In the words of that coward, Dr. Smith, “danger Will Robinson.”

  7. The bottom line is whoever’s name is on that plaque should’ve looked over all safety precautions. If not don’t put your name on a plaque makes you look like a fool. What happens if someone falls off jumps off there’s no precaution, no barricades to stop individuals. Well guess what the village is responsible in a lawsuit .

  8. What say you captain of the police – patrolling for juveniles, homeless folks or abandoned RVs. We just hired a shit load of more police, wasn’t this part of the reasoning to cover the developments and garage

“Well guess what the village is responsible in a lawsuit .”

The Village is not responsible if someone *jumps* from the top floor of the garage. Where did you get your law degree? I suggest you contact the school and ask for a refund…

  10. Well my compadre ,the village is aware of this now. If they don’t take action that means they’re condoning it. So if someone jumps off of falls off and they can be restrain somehow. Guess what people will sue . Take a look at the George Washington Bridge they put netting under the walkway so if you do jump You will be caught by the Net. And restrained. The bottom line is if someone’s coughing off up there and falls and it could’ve been avoided guess what the village has a lawsuit on their hands. If you think people would still think again. They will find a loophole.

  11. Drove by “the Dayton” a couple of times today….interesting folks checking it out and presumably looking to rent. Anecdotal evidence thus far points to this being a total shit show….Florida is filling up fast and the 10.75% state income tax kicks in here in a few days in NJ. Paying for the privilege of living here just not worth it anymore. Punch in that 10.75 over the next 10 years in an excel sheet – Florida resort house and college are paid for by leaving.
    Later suckers.

  12. It is dangerous and young folks think they are invincible. And drunk folks. Please install something much higher than that short wall.

  13. Wrought iron pikes with tarred heads. That should send a message.

  14. If someone is informing you that the village is not responsible, think again. Somehow someway the village will be responsible. This location just opened up. There are a few things that were overlooked . And now they are coming out , And now all these little things is going to cost the taxpayers more money. We never ever wanna hear that the Village doesn’t have any money.

  15. We all know that the garage was a huge mistake from the beginning. We really cannot blame the current counsel for the fact that the pandemic hit, and that’s why zero people park in the garage. Perhaps we can’t blame any of them for the fact that the possibility of somebody accidentally falling off one of the upper levels is a sincere reality. But they darn well ought to do something to correct this, and quickly now that it has been identified.

  16. Can anyone give us the amount of money that the garage made since it has been opened. Or is that something they don’t wanna talk about.

  17. I was shocked when I travelled to the top and saw no fence around the perimeter. Any new parking garage I have seen includes a fence to prevent accidental and intentional falls & throwing of any large object easily over. When I was up there I was able to look over the side without any effort.

On another note, kids were hanging up there when I was there at night and they seemed to also be playing with the elevator (going up and down to the different levels) — I wounded if the electric and maintenance bill of elevators was factor in the cost.

  18. Time to periodically patrol the parking garage.

  19. I’m Shocked.
    Shocked.

  21. We not blaming the current counsel. We are blaming the individuals that are overlooking the job. What department overlooks major construction. How come they couldn’t figure this out. What is overlooked. Maybe fencing was not put in the pricing and they didn’t have the budget. If so we get it ,but it should’ve been documented. Let’s investigate.

  22. Do you know how much money we can make if we turn that place into skateboard Park. And during the summer have movies up there that would be pretty cool. And how about music venues on the top. The top officials need to make money thank thank thank utilize the space rent it out , Make money. Because I park in garage is not making any money. Look at the train station empty every day. What about Park and ride empty five cars a day. They are losing a lot of money. Well I guess they don’t need a parking department anymore.

  23. Yes turn it into a rooftop bar and it will generate a ton of money in the summer.

  24. Turn it into a COVID morgue

  25. I drove over to the garage to see what this was all about. It’s really weird, they have sturdy chain-link fencing on the ramps so that you can’t throw some thing or go in the spaces between the ramps. It makes no sense to have fencing there. Then you get to the outer perimeters on the upper levels and there’s nothing to protect a person who might sit on the edge. I got out of the car, and the wall on the upper level doesn’t come very high at all on my body. I think this is a very very dangerous situation, and it needs to be corrected. Fencing needs to be installed quickly. be put along the outside walls for a lot of reasons.

  26. Someone received a nice big fat envelope. Didn’t they.

  27. Who is in charge of doing the Maintenance at this location, liter & so on .

  28. Put up a fence. Now. It is a no brainer. Kids will be kids and we don’t want a tragic outcome.

  29. Isn’t it so ridiculous. How can you not think of safety in 2020. I was just overlooked. There’s a reason on the top of all new buildings there is fencing at the top. And it’s not for someone jumping off it’s actually put there for maintenance employees not being blown off from the wind. But that’s that. It’s just common sense. I don’t know what happened to the Village of Ridgewood in the past few years with common sense. The Village of Ridgewood used to be leaders not any more. The village has become a follower. What a shame. It would take a long long time to become a leader again. It’s because we lost so much experience, and the people that are running things that I don’t have experience, obviously It shows doesn’t it.
