Hackensack NJ, The search for a missing Hudson County college student has come to a somber conclusion. Officials confirmed Wednesday that the body of 20-year-old Emilio Acosta was recovered from the Hackensack River in Secaucus last week.
Acosta, a resident of Weehawken, had been missing since mid-December, sparking a months-long search and a $20,000 reward offer from his family. The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office discovered his body on Friday, ending a period of painful uncertainty for the local community.
A Disappearance Following a Mental Health Crisis
The timeline of Emilio’s disappearance points to a tragic intersection of mental health struggles and a sudden disappearance. According to his parents, Emilio was treated for a manic episode at an Englewood emergency room just hours before he vanished.
On the night of December 18, around midnight, the family heard their front door slam. Emilio had left the home with only a jacket and a backpack. He was later spotted on surveillance footage near MetLife Stadium in Bergen County, running past a Shell gas station on Route 3. This was the last confirmed sighting of the young man until his recovery last week.
Remembering Emilio Acosta
Emilio was described by his mother as a “really good kid” and a dedicated student. His academic journey included:
-
Attending Xavier, a private Jesuit school in New York City.
-
Graduating from Weehawken High School.
-
Attending Hudson County Community College (HCCC).
-
Transferring to the University of Pittsburgh before returning home to continue his studies and seek treatment for his health.
Despite his academic transitions, his family emphasized that he felt deeply supported at home and was actively working on his recovery prior to the December episode.
Community and Mental Health Awareness
This heartbreaking outcome has resonated deeply across North Jersey, from Hudson County to the East Rutherford area where he was last seen. While the Prosecutor’s Office has not released further details regarding the circumstances of his death, the case highlights the critical importance of mental health resources and support systems for young adults.
Our thoughts are with the Acosta family and the Weehawken community during this difficult time.
