New York NY, A weekend outing turned into a fatal disaster in the waters of New York Harbor late Saturday night when a 21-foot motorboat capsized near Liberty Island, resulting in the tragic deaths of a 27-year-old mother and her 5-month-old infant daughter. The infant’s father was also on board during the incident.
Authorities have arrested the boat’s operator, 46-year-old Manuel Hernandez of Midtown Manhattan, charging him with 13 counts of reckless endangerment. Meanwhile, federal authorities are investigating whether the vessel was operating as an unregistered, illegal charter service.
Late-Night Emergency Response Near Liberty Island
First responders were dispatched to the Upper New York Bay shortly before 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, following urgent reports of an overturned 2019 white Yamaha motorboat.
