Washington DC, the Trump administration has initiated a sweeping review of federal employees, demanding that all 2.3 million federal workers submit weekly accomplishment reports or face potential termination. The move, spearheaded by Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has ignited controversy among federal workers, unions, and legal experts.

Mandatory Productivity Reports or Resignation?

On Saturday evening, federal employees across multiple agencies, including the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), received an email with the subject line, “What did you do last week?” The directive requires employees to submit five bullet points summarizing their weekly accomplishments by Monday night—or risk losing their jobs.

Musk’s Warning on X

🚨 Musk reinforced the directive with a post on X (formerly Twitter):
“All federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week. Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation.”

This followed a Truth Social post from President Donald Trump, urging DOGE to accelerate government downsizing and reshape the federal workforce.

Unclear Legal Standing & Agency Pushback

📌 Key Concerns:

  • Legality of Firings: Legal experts question whether Musk has the authority to terminate federal employees based on their email responses—or lack thereof.
  • Confidential Work: Employees handling classified or sensitive information may struggle to comply.
  • Judiciary & Independent Agencies Affected: Even federal judiciary employees—who are not part of the executive branch—reportedly received the email.

Some agencies, including NOAA and the Executive Office for United States Attorneys, have sent follow-up emails advising employees not to respond while they verify the legitimacy of the request.

Union Backlash & Employee Outrage

The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), the largest federal employee union, vowed to fight any unlawful terminations.

💬 Everett Kelley, AFGE President:
“Once again, Elon Musk and the Trump administration have shown their utter disdain for federal employees and the critical services they provide to the American people.”

Federal employees, already on edge after recent mass layoffs, expressed frustration and fear.

📢 A longtime federal worker stated:
“After more than two decades of federal service, with outstanding performance reviews and multiple awards, someone at OPM is going to read my five bullets and decide if I’m productive enough?”

DOGE’s Aggressive Cuts: A Costly Mistake?

Musk’s cost-cutting DOGE initiative has been rapidly reducing the federal workforce, leading to haphazard firings that:
Mistakenly terminated critical employees in nuclear safety, defense, and energy sectors.
Fired workers whose salaries are not funded by taxpayers.
Triggered economic concerns in communities reliant on federal jobs.

The first wave of firings targeted probationary employees and those in new roles, but the indiscriminate cuts have sparked widespread criticism.

What Happens Next?

Despite widespread backlash from Federal Unions , the Trump administration appears committed to reshaping the federal workforce. However, with legal challenges, union resistance, and internal agency pushback, the fate of millions of federal employees remains uncertain.

💬 What do you think? Should federal employees be required to justify their productivity weekly, or is this an overreach of power? Share your thoughts below!

  1. This needs to be done in the Village Of Ridgewood, especially at the top.
Again, the topic will come up. Maybe I’ll write a little letter to Donald Trump.
    Paid stipends
    Who’s receiving them?
    Why are they receiving them?
How much are they receiving in that stipend?
    Who authorized it.
Are they certified to receive that stipend in that position?
Full audit of all employees positions regarding civil service rules.
Under our investigation, only the police department and five of the department are following the laws and rules while other departments are looking the other way, just handing out positions, entitled without being verbal and physical test, tested by civil service just giving them an application doesn’t make them the individual Qualified for that position. That’s what’s been going on in the past few years ridiculous. We wonder how many individuals are not qualified. You cannot be qualified just because you’re a friend of a friend. If I was one of these individuals, I would be worrying right now. And for the ones who put thumbs down while you must be one of them.

  2. I am all for a good culling of useless roles in this monstrous sized bureaucracy but this seems to be done in a chaotic way by Musk. DOGE should work with the department’s secretaries directly instead of overstepping them and going directly to employees. You would do the same thing in a business setting.

    1. Git Er Done.

    2. Totally agree.

  3. Good start but if this is going to work we need to go all the way. You can’t just pull up a few of the most obvious weeds and hope for the best. Every American should stand before a DOGE like committee at least once every five years? What have you done to earn your place in this world? Cheerleading from sidelines isn’t enough. Trump and Musk can only do so much.

    1. And to whom are we to report? The last time I checked we were a democratic republic, not a dictatorship. Or, maybe that’s changing?

      1. Last time we checked, your “democratic republic” hasn’t been very good, or efficient, at making decisions that are beneficial to the people. See, e.g. the work that DOGE is doing. Look at your economy. Look at your health. Look at your education. All victims of the decisions made by the people you elect.

To whom are we to report? Would you rather we continue to allow unqualified people driven by personal greed to dictate policies that are best decided by the experts in their fields? You are to report to the experts.

This idea of democracy and voting worked well when people didn’t know any better but we live in a scientific and technological society now. The time for making decisions based on your personal wants and biases is over. All questions should be submitted to the objective light of science and answered accordingly. Maybe this will be the digital god Elon talks about.

  6. Get out there and do some work instead of riding around drinking and coffee, I constantly see trucks driving into Midlandpark to grab coffee ridiculous.
