Westwood NJ, Two hospitals in New Jersey are currently unable to admit new patients following a ransomware cyberattack that potentially exposed patient information. The affected hospitals, Hackensack Meridian Mountainside Medical Center in Montclair and Hackensack Meridian Pascack Valley Medical Center in Westwood, both under the Ardent Health Services umbrella, have implemented patient diversion measures, redirecting incoming patients to nearby emergency rooms.
Cybersecurity expert Scott Schober, from Berkeley Varitronics Systems, emphasized the increasing frequency of cyberattacks, especially on hospitals as they transition from paper to digital records. Hospitals are lucrative targets for cybercriminals seeking significant payouts on the dark web. Schober explained that hospital data is about five times more valuable than personal data, leading to potential ransom demands exceeding $1.5 million.
In response to the cyberattack, Ardent Health Services took its network offline, suspending user access to its IT applications. The affected hospitals are also rescheduling non-emergency and elective procedures until systems are fully restored. Emergency Rooms are operating under divert status as a precaution while the impact is assessed.
Backing up data is crucial in mitigating the effects of such attacks, according to Schober. Regularly backed up data allows organizations to restore systems to a pre-attack state, providing a layer of protection against data loss.
Hospitals in at least three states are diverting patients from their emergency rooms after a major cyberattack hit their parent company last week.Ardent Health Services, which oversees 30 hospitals across the U.S., said Monday that it had been the victim of a severe ransomware attack in Oklahoma, News Mexico and Texas, forcing it to take action.
While no other hospitals under Hackensack Meridian were affected due to their separate network, the full extent of the cyberattack, including compromised data and the timeline for resolution, remains uncertain, according to Ardent Health Services.
