New Bridge Landing NJ, the Bergen County Historical Society is excited to exhibit these two 1783 paintings of Washington & Greene, I just had to go back to admire and tweak the position of the audience seating.
To mark the 243rd Anniversary of the “times that try men’s souls,” the Bergen County Historical Society, will sponsor a day of living history, scholarly presentations and a slice of Bergen County’s rich history, in our backyard on November 24, 2019.

Event Schedule: 12:30 – 4:30 pm
12:30 pm: Reading of The American Crisis at the Bridge, by President and Chairman of HNBLSPC, historian & reenactor Jim Smith.
1:15 pm: Past President Deborah Powell (please meet at the Steuben House) will give a brief talk on the new book Bridge That Saved a Nation, Bergen County, New Bridge and the Hackensack Valley, by the late historian and Past BCHS president Kevin W. Wright. All royalties benefit BCHS.
1:30 pm: Marta Black will be joining us to exhibit two c. 1783 paintings of Washington and Greene and speaking on the paintings and General Nathanael Greene in the Southern Campaign.
3:00 pm: Military historian, author and Past President, Todd Braisted “To Drive the Rebels out of the Country or Make them own them Own George Their Master.” Bergen County Loyalists in the Southern Campaigns, 1779-1782.
The IV Battalion, NJ Volunteers will be on site demonstrating. Tours in all three 18th century Jersey Dutch sandstone houses that are connected by an ADA gravel walking path through the historic battleground site. Walk across the 1889 Swing Bridge on the Hackensack River and watch for American Eagles and Redtail Hawks. Revolutionary War reenactors will be present throughout the site to answer questions and demonstrate life of the common soldier and camp follower. Don’t forget the New Bridge Donuts & Cider (hot or cold) in the Tavern. Visit the Out-Kitchen as our cooks prepare seasonal 18th century foods and our resident blacksmith plies his trade. There’s a children’s activity in the Campbell-Christie House.
The Society’s treasure of Revolutionary War artifacts are on display in the Steuben House. There is an exhibit of 9 period maps that show New Bridge in the American Revolution. Our gift shop will be open. New book available: History of New Bridge and the valley. Bridge That Saved a Nation, Bergen County, New Bridge and the Hackensack Valley. Have your copy embossed with the BCHS seal and signed.
