Twp. of Washington NJ, With the arrival of warmer weather and spring breezes, the Township of Washington Fire Department is issuing a critical advisory for all residents. April has officially entered a high-risk phase for brush fires. Due to a combination of low humidity, rising temperatures, and the current lack of green foliage to act as a natural firebreak, the conditions are perfect for a small spark to turn into a dangerous blaze.

In recent weeks, local fire teams have already responded to several brush fires. Many of these incidents could have been prevented with increased awareness and strict adherence to local safety ordinances.

How to Protect Your Home and Community

The environmental conditions right now mean that we must all be extra vigilant. To keep our neighborhoods safe, residents are urged to follow these safety protocols:

  • Exercise Extreme Caution: Be mindful when landscaping, using fire pits, or cooking outdoors. A single ember can travel quickly in dry conditions.

  • Know the Law: Township Ordinance 120-5 strictly prohibits open burning. This ordinance is in place to minimize the risk of uncontrolled fire spread and protect your property.

  • Report Immediate Hazards: If you see fire or smell smoke, do not hesitate. Call 9-1-1 immediately.
