Twp. of Washington NJ, Travis Gallo, who was convicted of first-degree murder for stabbing his sister 109 times in 2013 when he was 17, will be getting a new trial, according to a court ruling and multiple reports.
Gallo, one of 10 children of Dr. Robert Gallo, a well-known foster parent from Township of Washington , was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the killing of his 20-year-old adopted sister, Tela. The tragic incident occurred after what Gallo described as ongoing tension following an argument the month before.
According to court documents, Gallo waived his right to remain silent and admitted to the murder during a police interview conducted without his father present. The documents reveal that Travis waited in his room with a kitchen knife before kicking in his sister’s door and stabbing her 109 times.
At the time of the murder, Travis was prosecuted as an adult. His defense has since argued that he may not have been mentally fit to stand trial and that there were issues surrounding the waiver of his rights during the initial interrogation. Notably, the Appellate Court found a Miranda rights violation, as Gallo’s father was not given the opportunity to speak with his son privately before waiving the right to be present during the interview.
The court’s ruling this week means Travis Gallo, now 28, will face a new trial.
