USA Today: 5 craziest crimes of the week Ridgewood Scores Number One

Editors, NewserA most unusual municipal theft and a mailman with a criminally bad work ethic make this week’s list:

Jersey official steals $460K … in quarters: Last year, the public works inspector in Ridgewood, N.J., got caught stealing $500 in quarters from the room where the village dumped its parking-meter coins. To say that’s not the half of it doesn’t even come close. Turns out, Thomas Rica stole taken $460,000 over two years—in the simplest of ways.

Cops: Lazy mailman trashed 1K letters, packages: If you never got grandma’s Christmas card and happen to live on Long Island, this might explain things: A mail carrier threw more than a thousand pieces of mail into garbage bins along his Massapequa and Seaford route.

  1. Time for our Mayor to spin another defensive statement as to why so much money was stolen without any system in place to NOTICE that it was missing.

  2. If Rica worked for the Engineering department.
I’m guessing the parking authority falls under the engineering department.
Which was about to give Rica a promotion.
This can’t be good for anyones political career.
    1.8 million quarters missing.

  3. How do you take around 3,500 quarters a day every working day without being detected? That’s not pocket change.

  4. #3 – load up the empty computer bad….what do the cameras show ?

  5. Hey Mr. Mayor, why aren’t we getting comforting, reassuring robocalls from you about this national joke???????

I suspect the Village will just get rid of the meters, period, to encourage more to visit downtown.

  7. that would of bin the worst move for the town to give that jerk a promotion. most of the workers did not like him, because he was a big bull shit story on two feet. no one trusted him. but he out bull shit his boss’s . he made them all look like a big ass.

  8. a “We’re #1” trifecta ! NJ has highest property taxes in the country, Bergen County has highest property taxes in NJ, and the Ridgewood parking meter theft is tops in the five craziest crimes as seen by USA Today ! We’re building such a bright future for our children.

  9. I would like to know who was asleep on this one how is this unnoticed and who’s going to be held accountable?

  10. #3, How do you take around 3,500 quarters a day every working day without being sent to jail? How do you steal a half million and only have to repay it over time? How do you get your pension and accrued time off to count towards that restitution?

Something is fishy. The sheer amount of theft tells me he’s covering for others who were involved, and the fact that he’s been allowed this ridiculous plea smells like organized crime and a corrupt DA.

I’m glad it’s getting nationwide coverage. I hope the FBI is paying attention.

  11. The IRS has an award program for whistleblowers – generally cases involving individual taxpayers with gross income of less that $200,000. The awards through this program are less, with a maximum award of 15% up to $10 million. In addition, the awards are discretionary and the informant cannot dispute the outcome of the claim in Tax Court. The rules for these cases are found at Internal Revenue Code IRC Section 7623(a) – Informant Claims Program. If you decide to submit information and seek an award for doing so, use IRS Form 211 (https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f211.pdf).

Name names please #7, who else should get fired here ? Who were his bosses and why haven’t they been fired, too ? Just what do these guys have on the Village, on the County, on the DA and on the Judge that’s protecting them ? This story is just getting interesting.

  13. the new manager and mayor and council will need to look into this scam. much more to this story will come out. for the past five to seven years when the new boy’s crew took over some of the village department’s a lot of dirty under the rug scams have been going on, they try to hurt people’s job’s and the workers have had it. and to top it all to try and give this bull shit’er a BIG PROMOTION ware no like him and trusted him to boot. the talk on the street and in the hall we always new he was a bull shit scammer.the one’s who put him in power that are still working for the village should pack up and say good buy. before the council show’s you bums the door.

  14. the talk on the street is the mayor and council can not believe this happened.
