I’m sure Valley will file suit so they don’t have to pay
It’s a great idea that’s long overdue.
Keep in mind everything Valley donates is tax deductible.
This would be a huge deal for Ridgewood. I believe that the assessment would be in the neighborhood of $4.5 million or about 10% of the municipal budget that’s not legislated or negotiated. Maybe we could collect a couple years worth of back taxes too. Couldn’t happen to nicer bunch of people. Long overdue.
“Long overdue” is an understatement.
I’m relatively new to Ridgewood. Could someone please explain to me why so much hostility to Valley? (My wife delivered our 2nd child there, and then baby ended up in pediatric ICU for 10 days soon after that. I gotta say it was pretty nice not having to drive all the way to Hackensack for a “good” hospital!)
john just search Valley Hospital on this blog to get a start
If your kids will go to BF someday, you definitely should get up to speed on the Valley expansion, oh I mean renewal.
James,
Will do. Is the issue just with the proposed expansion, or are there issues beyond that?
John way way beyond
John V: I am a big supporter of Valley and refer to it it as Ridgewood’s Crown Jewel. By all sort of measures it is one of the top hospitals in New Jersey and we should be proud and happy to have it in our backyard. Over six thousand Ridgewood residents usse Valley every year. To understand the anti Valley mania in Ridgewood it is a good idea to read a sampling of cowardly anonymous illogical if not downright idiotic comments in the Ridgewood Pravda, I mean Blog. The public debate has been hijacked by a small minority of self absorbed, selfish, loud-mouths I refer to as the vocalantis, rhymes with vigilantes. These people can’t see past their nose and are so afraid of change they are against everything, be it Valley renewal, building a much needed garage in the CBD, building much needed apartments, developing Schedler, etc., etc. They are so nasty in their ways, they are turning a Ridgewod that could be thought of as Mr. Rogers Neighborhood into Bergen County’s Westeros, which you would be familiar with if you watch The Game of Thrones. These unfortunate misfits think they can preserve their Camelot by soaking it in formaldehyde. They don’t realize they are killing it by doing so. Someday they will wake up to the fact that to preserve you have to renew.
Rurik, not everyone against the expansion is a blowhard hiding in anonymity as we have respectfully locked horns in a polite manner on several occasions.. Plain and simple, way too big. The approaches they took were tone deaf and turned many in the town against them. The unfortunate part is that you have very dedicated professionals and support staff there that do wonderful things. Unfortunately management has corporate megalomania. With the way health care is evolving, Valley is too small to be independent. Just let HUMC buy them out and be done with it.
John V… once again, welcome to Ridgewood.
Paul, let me first tell you how much I respect your courteous and measured messages. You are a gentleman of the old school, and I treasure our debates. We may disagree but are never disagreeable. Second, my apologies if I came across s saying every one against the hospital is a blowhard, etc. My complaint is seeing the vocalantis demonizing the hospital and its Management. They do so much good for the community, and they need to renew to remain relevant. Lastly I would be careful with what you wish for. I would hate them to sell to HUMC.
John V – Having learned to be very wary of Valley’s corporate designs and tactics, does not diminish what a great hospital it is. Great facilities, doctors, nurses, volunteers, etc. Given the deep well of good feeling that they naturally generate, their longstanding choice of distasteful tactics and attitude is astounding. They never heard the phrase “you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar”. The top administration of the hospital does appear to regard the residents (except when they are patients) as flies.
John V. You are being harsh in your judgement. I attended the Planning Board meetings several years ago when it was considering the Valley application.and where the Board voted in favor of the application. Valley showed extreme flexibility, jumping through every hoop they were presented with. To quote Pogo, we have met the enemy and he is us. The vocalantis who are dead set against all change. “Self-absorbed, risk-averse, and short-sighted” to quote Thomas Friedman. I add selfish and mean. Unless people kowtow to their demands, they get tagged as being uncaring, selfish, arrogant, etc. Valley is the tip of the iceberg. See what the vocalantis have done with the apartments, the garage, Schedler, etc. Believe me there is no way to please them except for agreeing to do nothing. I suggest you attend Village Council meetings.
John V. Rurik continues to spout useless rhetoric. This is about money, not helping the community. Let’s face it, if it were not about money(and greed), they would not be suing. In a nutshell, what they want is way too big for a residential neighborhood. By asking for a ridiculous amount of space to compete with Hackensack, and keep their nice paying jobs, they have shown to not care about changing the entire town.
Rurik at 10:19pm, please note that the 7:47 comment is by “Anonymous”, not by me, though I believe it was addressed to me since I had asked for the background on the situation.
John V. My apologies to you.
Bill H. Here we go again, demonizing one of the best hospital administrations in the country. “Way too big?” By what measure?
Rurik please stop; Valley has the worst tone deaf management I have ever seen , a good management would have had this thing done and everyone happy 5 years ago, even the huge and bureaucratic NJT makes Valley look like clue less fools . After a bit of a misstep they quickly came to terms saw the light with the train station and worked with the town. The fact is Valley thought they could bully everyone and still think they can .
Rurik, here we go again because it’s easy to do. Like 5:57 said, a half-way decent, less greedy, management team would have easily had this resolved by now without alienating half (at least) the town. It’s called COMPROMISE !!! “Way too big” for the size of the lot it is on in a residential neighborhood, the traffic it will generate during and after construction, being next to a school, etc. They want to put a Regional Medical Center on a piece of property that can’t handle it…period ! Let them move it to Mahwah where they have the room. Oh wait, Mahwah may want them to pay taxes, or whatever. Well, I guess “one of the best hospital administrations in the country” (really ?) should have no problem figuring that out.
