  1. Remind me again WHY can’t we use the live tree in Van Neste Square? Why does a tree have to be cut down and put in a manhole in a sidewalk by the train tracks? Van Neste is such a lovely park, central to all.

Oh that’s right, Paul Vaggianos had to have the tree in line of sight of his restaurant.

  2. Thats the story #1

  3. Paul Vaggianos would like us to believe that he owns Ridgewood.

  4. Because long before you moved here, it was a Christmas Tree and a tradition.
Van Neste square was for the potheads and gearheads.

  5. The tree in Van Neste Square has always been a tradition and hopefully will remain so as for cutting down a lvd tree odds are pretty good the homeowner is looking to be rid of it any way.

  6. Just take a big truck and a chain saw with you to the woods in Mahwah and cut one down. No one will know the difference.

    Next question…

  7. Thank #5 and also go for your restaurant

  8. #4. I can guarantee you I have lived in RIdgewood much longer than you.

lol oh I’m sure you can ‘guarantee ‘ that.
    You are quite the dip$hit.
Now go back to your room in mommy’s basement troll.

  10. #8 said – #4 I can guarantee you I have lived in RIdgewood much longer than you.

I would like to see you prove that., and no, I am not Poster #4.

  11. Oh look a Ridgewood longevity dick swinging contest! What a bunch of parochial tools.

Let me guess, you just moved here from New YAWK.
Another big mouthed newbie who wants to make this place like Brooklyn.

  13. oh look a coward ( #11) who makes foolish claims they can’t back up ( I can guarantee you I have lived in RIdgewood much longer than you) and then hides behind a stupid comment about swinging dicks.

  14. Ok #1….I’ll remind you…..the tree has been donated for years and placed at the top of broad & Ridgewood…..it’s a TRADITION that newbies tried to change in the past and failed. Paul does a lot of leg work to get it done and over the past few years has worked with Downs Tree Service who does the job WITHOUT charge. Shut your pie hole, let the professionals do what they do and show up and mooch like u usually do at the lighting.

  15. # 14. You are clearly suffering from dementia. Newbies did hot try to move it to Van Neste, where people can gather in a park instead of a street. mayor Killion did this, and he has lived in RIdgewood his whole life. Hardly a newbie. It was lovely there, using a live tree instead of a chopped down one. Don’t kid yourself, paul Vagianos has only one agenda and that is his own personal agenda. He wants the tree near his fast food Greek place.

  16. It looks great by the train station, and can be seen from all angles. When it was at Van Neste Square, you drive by and never see it. The recycled decorations they tried are a whole other topic!

  17. #15- the tree was there when that whole corner where the greek place is was ‘woolworths’.

  18. I wish it was still a woolworth

  19. #17 – true. When I worked in NYC 25 years ago, the tree at the train station was always a bright welcome home during the holiday season. I love coming down W. Ridgewood Ave and seeing it there, too. Hats off to Downes for their support. I have new trouble with using a tree that a homeowner was planning on cutting down anyway.

The new tree in Van Neste is lovely but it seems to be too far back in the park to be a focal point. Perhaps now that it is larger, it will work better.

Oh, and how I miss Woolworth’s and the hardware store!

  20. I agree, driving down W. Ridgewood ave is a nice sight.
I liked eating at woolworths lunch counter too.
I also miss Drapkins, Winchells, Bobby Knapps, AL & Harry’s, Sealfons, McHughs and many other long time stores in the CBD that have disappeard.
I liked the local gas stations on Franklin where you would always get a friendly smile and a washed windshield (unlike the rude turban wearing types on RT 17 now)

  21. It is ironic to hear this dialogue. During the discussion of the menorah over the past couple years, one constant refrain at the meetings of the Jewish community was that most people wanted to keep the tradition of the huge Christmas tree on Broad. The tree on Broad street is a great tradition and it truly brings a holiday spirit to the town. The lighting is a Rockwell-ian night in town and that vibe would not exist were it not for the over sized tree.

The tree in VanNess gets lost in the noise. It is nice for the churches and Santa in the park but it can never replace the tree on Broad.

    Well said #11

  23. #22 = A lap dog for #11

  24. did you get that 15?
Read the comments…..it’s what the MAJORITY wants.
Killion did it for the nubies, don’t be stupid.
The tree is where it belongs and there it will stay.
Have fun in your “lovely park” – or go back to Brooklyn.
