A group of about two dozen residents were officially informed this week that the village is unable to alleviate flood risks associated with a ditch located on private property in the Warren Place and Marshall Street neighborhood.

Residents in the Warren Place and Marshall Street neighborhood were informed this week that ditches located on private property will not be cleaned by the village.

Residents in the Warren Place and Marshall Street neighborhood were informed this week that ditches located on private property will not be cleaned by the village.

Homeowners in the area told The Ridgewood News on Wednesday that they had just received a letter from the village, dated Aug. 17, stating that “current circumstances do not allow for maintenance on private property, nor improvements on private property.”

“Any improvements to the drainage ditch,” the letter continued, “would be difficult due to minimal access for heavy equipment through resident’s yards.”

Lastly, residents whose property contains portions of the ditch were advised to clean the area on their own.

The village’s decision was rendered following residents’ public pleas at several council meetings this summer. Susan Schreiber and Pam Welch were the most recent homeowners to ask the governing body for help, speaking to council members during this month’s public meeting.

  1. Did Paul actually risk losing votes by saying NO?

  2. If you watched the Council meeting you would have seen that he didn’t know what to say.

  3. hey look I do live in a flood zone too. and you know what I do keep my yard clean and do not put any thing into the road or on top of my storm drain. some people need to help them self to. I took a ride over and looked around and seen some people dumping grass and wood and old leaves in to the back at that spot.so why should the town clean up your shit in your back yard.are you saying the town put all that into your back yard.I don’t think so people. some are just a pain in the ass and very lazy. get out and clean your back yard up. any one in a flood zone new when they got bought the place. so stop the bull shit.

  4. Village Bird, you are correct that people knew what they were doing, however, the Village could and should be doing more. For instance, have all the drains in the area been vacuumed out since the last Hurricane or even in the last few years? Secondly, regarding the drain between Marshall and Warren…where does the drain originate?

  5. Please ” Where does drain originate” Based on that logic every time the Saddle Brook overflows Ridgewood should charge there town where the brook originated. Get your boots on and clean yourself .
