WOODLAND PARK, N.J. — As the 80th anniversary of Amelia Earhart’s disappearance was marked Sunday, a new theory surfaced as to what happened to her as she attempted to become the first woman to circumnavigate the globe.
Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, disappeared over the Pacific Ocean on July 2, 1937. Many believed she ran out of gas and crashed into the water.
A new documentary on the History Channel claims that a photograph found deep within the National Archives shows the famed lost pilot and Noonan captured by the Japanese on the Marshall Islands.
What an antiquated term “housewife”. She was a renowned aviator. Was her copilot really a househusband?
“What an antiquated term “housewife”. She was a renowned aviator. Was her copilot really a househusband?”
Please don’t disparage the navigator by calling him a “copilot”. Its very demeaning and frankly quite sexist. He was more than just an ancillary or auxiliary pilot, second in stature to a woman. He was a critical and co-equal member of the team with a very specific, highly talented skill set and you should treat him with the respect he deserves.
I won’t even dignify the “househusband” slur with a comment.
Pilot is gender neutral, as is co-pilot. It is not “sexist” to use that title.
You do not understand the issue . Was the response supposed to be just funny? If so, you missed the mark.
The prefix co-, now productively forms new words from bases beginning with any sound (co-conspirator; co-manage; coseismic), sometimes with the derived sense “auxiliary, subsidiary” (coenzyme; copilot), and, in mathematics and astronomy, with the sense “complement” (codeclination). nav·i·ga·tor
[ˈnavəˌɡādər]
NOUN
a person who directs the route or course of a ship, aircraft, or other form of transportation, especially by using instruments and maps.
To call a NAVIGATOR a “CO”(or ancillary) pilot is demeaning to the navigator.
The fact that you identify a NAVIGATOR (a highly skilled individual who is crucial to the successful operation of the aircraft) a “copilot” (an ancillary individual which is only necessary if the primary pilot “fails”) especially when he is male and the pilot is female is demeaning and sexist. Your comments expose your misandry. Your further comments that calling him a co-pilot is not sexist further proves your ignorance and prejudice against men because you fail to see that in this situation – reducing the importance of a highly skilled, critical member of the flight team (the navigator) to an unnecessary individual who’s sole purpose is to take over incase the pilot is unable. I doubt you would have such contempt for the navigator if it was a woman.
Clearly YOU do not understand the issue.
Clearly you have an ingrained prejudice against men.
Try to educate yourself and join the rest of us in the 21st century who have equal respect for men and women.
Navigator and co-navigator are gender neutral. You seem to not understand this.
Pilot is a gender neutral title. there is no prejudice in using either title. Think about it.
Director and Assistant Director are neutral titles. You can look them up in Wikipedia too.
You do not seem to understand.
This has nothing to do with the gender neutrality of these words – it has to do with your desire to minimize the male navigator by calling him an “extra” pilot rather than acknowledging his full value and worth as a navigator just because he is male.
I’m sure you would recognize the value of the navigator if it was a female.
You demeaned a navigator by calling him a co-pilot – a “spare” or “ancillary” pilot – rather than recognizing his inherent value as a navigator.
You seem to think that because he is a man he is not as important or relevant as a woman who is the pilot.
Your sexist views are so ingrained that you cannot even comprehend the issue, you do not even understand that by not referencing him as a navigator, you are minimizing his worth and by calling him an ancillary pilot subservient to a female is misandristic.
Try to overcome your misandry and try to treat men as equals and join the rest of us in the 21st century.
