MAHWAH –An American-themed barbecue at Ramapo College last Friday was nearly scrapped after the students’ ‘Uncle Sam’ promotional material wasdeemed “too offensive” and militaristic, according to Campus.org.

“I was told that our advertising was too ‘military and recruitment-oriented,’ because we had the Uncle Sam saying ‘I want you…’,” Ariana Rivera, assistant residence director of Bischoff Hall said in an email to College Republicans and Democrats.

The original proposal nearly a month earlier called for a barbecue encouraging students to register to vote.

Students in the school’s Republican and Democratic organizations agreed to run tables during the Sept. 16 event and get the word out to students that they should vote in the upcoming elections, according to Campus.org.

  1. Everything that we don’t like is not offensive. Uncle Sam is a traditional American icon that students should recognize. Used to promote and sell lots of things not just war. Using it for a voter registration was clever.

What is it about how children are taught that makes them see things black and white? Acceptable/uacceptable, offensive/inoffensive? Can’t they think fo themsalves? Everything that we do is judged and analyzed for no apparent reason.

Maybe students who did not like Uncle Sam could have ADDED to the promotional material rather that demand that Uncle Sam be removed. We are supposed to be inclusive.

That being said, the Uncle Sam shown above is disturbing.

  2. kids are being taught (indoctrinated?) into believing that everything patriotic and American is bad.
