Twp of Washington NJ, Washington Elementary School, part of the Westwood Regional School District, is set to receive significant upgrades including a fresh coat of paint, new sidewalks, and final asbestos abatement. These improvements aim to enhance safety and aesthetics, ensuring a better environment for students and staff.

Funding Approved for Enhancements

During the Thursday night meeting, the regional school board, which manages schools in Washington Township and Westwood, approved crucial funding for these projects. A $111,250 co-op bid from GL Group will cover the asbestos abatement, while a $69,432 co-op contract was awarded to Patch Management Inc. for sidewalk replacement.

Details of the Asbestos Abatement

The asbestos abatement will focus on the building’s pipe chase tunnels in the kindergarten-to-second grade section. These tunnels house critical infrastructure such as water pipes. While the exact timeline for the work was not specified, this project follows an emergency $88,000 asbestos abatement carried out last November due to a broken sewer pipe near the third to fifth-grade section.

Finishing this second round of abatement is essential for the district to proceed with upgrades to the school’s heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. Once the pipes in these tunnels are wrapped in non-asbestos material, the area will be safe for maintenance and further improvements.

Sidewalk Replacement and Other Upgrades

In addition to asbestos abatement, the school will see the replacement of uneven sidewalks near the drop-off zone, enhancing safety for students and visitors. School Business Administrator Keith Rosado mentioned the necessity of these replacements during the board meeting.

The district is also in the process of finalizing quotes for updated interior lighting and classroom repairs at Washington Elementary. A new paint job is scheduled for the upcoming school year, starting in the hallways and continuing into classrooms. This painting project is part of the district’s annual cycle of refreshing one school each year.
