Dear Residents:
There is currently a good bit of speculation and concern about large scale redevelopment projects coming to Westwood. I thought a quick review of how things get built in our town would be timely and appreciated. But in fact land use is nuanced and cannot be given a “quick review.”

The planning and administration of land use are critical to the vitality, health and safety, infrastructure, and economic stability of a municipality though, and they warrant a full explanation about how things work here in Westwood. For those interested in my summary of the full land use process in Westwood, please click the link below.
Here, I’ll just cut to the chase: Currently there are no formal requests for a rezone, an Area in Need of Redevelopment designation, or any large scale Use Variance applications before either the Governing Body or the Zoning Board of Adjustment.
The rumored plans for non-conforming, high-rise, high density residential redevelopments cannot currently be built, as-of-right, in the zones where they are rumored to be taking place.
Any such redevelopment would have to follow one of the procedural paths outlined above. And, all would involve completely transparent, prior public notice. Should such a plan be proffered, substantial public input would be most welcome.

  1. Supposedly there are no formal requests for rezoning ( at this time ) but that doesn’t mean there won’t be. Do town officials think residents are that stupid? Let’s get real here. Of course, Westwood just like surrounding towns will overdevelop and put in high density housing, etc. It’s just a matter of time.

  2. Yawn…Transparent process with public input. So what? Note the keyword “input” there. Negative feedback from the public will be noted, and then ignored. Keep voting Democrat and welcome your new neighbors…
