Ridgewood NJ, during a Monday, April 8th Ridgewood Board of Education meeting, Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Schwarz announced his intention of hiring and deploying two (2) Class III police officers for the 2024/2025 school year. These two (2) officers would replace the existing one (1) Ridgewood Police Department School Resource Officer now serving the school district.
The Class III officers would be fully armed and equipped with police radios, police vehicles, and other ancillary equipment (funding for all equipment provided by the Village of Ridgewood). The individuals are typically retired municipal/county/state police officers.
During a Wednesday, April 10th Ridgewood Village Council meeting, Ridgewood Police Chief Forest Lyons announced the Village’s intention of funding three (3) Class III police officers for deployment within the school district beginning in September of 2024. Chief Lyons indicated to Village Council members that salaries for the officers would be the school district’s responsibility. The suggested deployment of officers, according to Lyons, would be one (1) at Ridgewood High School, one (1) at Benjamin Franklin Middle School, and one (1) at George Washington Middle School
So, will it be two (2) or three (3) Class III police officers come September? Or perhaps they’ll stick with the existing School Resource Officer?

And what would these school offices do in the summertime and when there’s no school. Will they be walking the halls with a broom? How does that work?
It doesn’t matter that they will be paid from the Board of Education budget in the end. The taxpayers are the village will pay for it. Will these officers just be working at the schools or they’ll be a rotation?
Are these 12 month positions or 10 month positions like the teachers?
That’s a shame because Officer Hector is really nice, and he is so involved in the village. I hope this works out.

To do what? Protect the students? From what? If this is needed, like, truly needed in Ridgewood schools, there’s a way, way, waaaaaaay bigger problem here, and enlisting a couple of out-to-pasture okie dokes from Mayberry ain’t gonna do squat.
They haven’t made learning miserable enough but now they have to implant the little bullet of fear (look it up) in the kids’ and parents’ minds by making them think that math class just might be rudely interrupted by Columbine 3.0.
Nice gig for a couple of pensioners looking to supplement their income.
