Will a 23-cent increase in the gas tax prompt lawmakers to repeal the state’s prohibition against drivers pumping their own gas to ease the pain at the pump?
New Jersey and Oregon are the only two states which ban drivers from pumping their own gas. However, legislative leaders on both sides of the aisle expressed strong support for keeping the ban in place on Wednesday.

Most say that repealing the law would not be enough to help drivers who are feeling the sting of higher gas prices after the tax increase took effect on Tuesday.
State Senate President Stephen Sweeney reiterated his earlier position that he would not post a bill repealing the self-serve ban, by offering a one-word comment, through a spokesman. No.
No, they will not,
this doesn’t work… its an illusion.
Studies have shown that in states where there is a “discount” for self-serve, there is ACTUALLY no discount, but a “premium” added for full-service.
.
So by “allowing” self-serve, NJ drivers will NOT be getting “cheaper gas”, they will actually be paying more – either by paying the same price for reduced services (self-serve at full-service prices) or paying a premium to get back the services they used to have (extra cost for full-service).
Right, 12:24. They merely add a surcharge for NOT doing it yourself. People in wheelchairs, elderly, in a rush, in office clothes or dressed up–women having to take their pocketbooks with them, abandoning the car to go inside and pay–getting the gas smell or even gas itself on your shoes or clothes–UGH. Can’t put down the driver’s-side window and ask for directions. I feel greatly inconvenienced when forced to pump gas in other states. And why deprive people of jobs we don’t want to do ourselves?
No!
