New Milford NJ, A terrifying early-morning home invasion in New Milford ended with a resident taking drastic measures to protect his family. At approximately 3:34 a.m. on Sunday, March 29, a father living on Faller Drive was forced to defend his home after an intoxicated intruder kicked in his apartment door.

According to Captain Kevin Van Saders, the resident successfully restrained the suspect until police arrived, leaving the intruder with a significant injury.

“You Have the Wrong Apartment”

The incident began when the resident was awakened by aggressive knocking. Attempting to de-escalate the situation, the resident opened the door slightly to inform the man—a 26-year-old from Long Branch—that he was at the wrong location.

Despite the warning, the suspect began banging “aggressively” on the door. Fearing for the safety of his wife and child inside, the resident armed himself with a kitchen knife for protection.

The Confrontation: From the Doorway to the Kitchen

The situation turned violent when the suspect kicked the door open, sending the resident reeling backward into the living room. As the intruder rushed toward him, a struggle ensued that moved into the kitchen.

  • The Struggle: Both men fell to the floor during the scuffle.

  • The Defense: The resident used the kitchen knife to slash the intruder, causing a large laceration to the suspect’s skull.

  • The Capture: When New Milford officers entered the apartment, they found the resident successfully holding the bloodied suspect down on the kitchen floor.

Charges and Medical Status

The suspect was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Following a thorough investigation by the New Milford Police, authorities confirmed:

  • The Resident: Will not be charged with any crime, as his actions were deemed a lawful defense of his family and home.

  • The Suspect: Currently charged with trespassing, with additional criminal charges pending as the investigation continues.

Police Note: The suspect was reportedly intoxicated and claimed he was attempting to enter a different apartment at the time of the break-in.
