Paramus NJ, Shoplifting at the Garden State Plaza reached a bizarre new level this week. A 55-year-old man from Astoria, New York, is facing multiple charges after allegedly attempting to smuggle a nearly $12,000 designer fur jacket out of Neiman Marcus using a specialized concealment device known as a “booster girdle.”

The arrest, confirmed by Paramus Police Chief Robert Guidetti, occurred on the evening of March 24 after a sharp-eyed officer noticed a very obvious clue sticking out of the suspect’s clothing.

The Bust: A Hanger Gives It Away

Paramus police were dispatched to Neiman Marcus shortly after 7:00 p.m. following reports of a shoplifter fleeing the store. The suspect, described as a tall male in a blue jacket and dark hat, didn’t make it very far.

Officer Matt Orefice intercepted the man in the mall parking lot. According to Chief Guidetti, the suspect’s “disguise” had one major flaw: a clothing hanger was visibly protruding from his clothes.

What is a “Booster Girdle”?

Upon further investigation, police discovered the suspect was wearing a “booster girdle.” * The Device: A booster girdle is a common tool used by professional shoplifters. It is designed to hold large volumes of merchandise against the body, often lined with materials to bypass security sensors.

  • The Loot: Tucked inside the girdle was a high-end blue Brunello Cucinelli fur jacket.

  • The Value: The luxury item is valued at a staggering $11,950.

Legal Consequences

The Astoria resident was taken into custody and is now facing several serious charges, including:

  • Possession of Stolen Property (High-value felony)

  • Possession of Burglary Tools (Related to the use of the booster girdle)

Chief Guidetti praised the quick response of the department, noting that the luxury retail corridors of Paramus remain a high-priority area for anti-theft patrols.

  1. this reminds me of the Animal House scene where they stuff a bunch of steaks into Pinto’s sweater at the Food King

  2. Worth it–he really enjoyed wearing the coat for the five minutes it took to reach the parking lot. Felt great!
