Wood-Ridge NJ, A century of life, 94 years in Bergen County, and a legacy of bravery—Wood-Ridge recently stood still to honor one of its most distinguished residents. On May 4th, Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco joined the community at the Wood-Ridge Senior Center to celebrate the 100th birthday of WWII Army Veteran Everett “Ed” Hornig.
Ed is more than just a centenarian; he is a living piece of American history. As a Purple Heart recipient who served under the legendary General George S. Patton, Ed’s service to our nation during World War II represents the pinnacle of the “Greatest Generation.”
A Centennial Celebration in Wood-Ridge
The Wood-Ridge Senior Center was filled with gratitude as neighbors and officials gathered to recognize Ed’s milestone. Jim Tedesco personally visited to honor Ed’s service and his deep roots in the community.
“Happy birthday, Ed! The County is incredibly grateful for your service and proud to celebrate with you,” Tedesco shared in a heartfelt social media tribute.
Ed’s story is a quintessential Bergen County tale. Having lived in the area for nearly a century, he has witnessed the transformation of Wood-Ridge firsthand, all while remaining a cornerstone of the local community.
Centenarians in New Jersey: A Growing Trend
Ed’s 100th birthday shines a light on a fascinating demographic shift. As healthcare and quality of life improve, more New Jerseyans are reaching the 100-year milestone.
How many centenarians are there in New Jersey? According to recent U.S. Census Bureau data and state health reports, New Jersey is home to an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 centenarians. This number has been steadily increasing, with the state often ranking among those with higher life expectancies in the U.S.
Reaching age 100 is a remarkable feat, but doing so with the distinguished record of a Purple Heart veteran like Ed Hornig makes the celebration even more significant for the Garden State.
