Hackensack NJ, A late-night tragedy at a busy Hackensack intersection has led to the arrest of a Bergenfield resident following a fatal hit-and-run. Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the charges against 38-year-old Terrence J. Hedden after a rapid investigation by local and county authorities.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, May 8, 2026. At approximately 12:49 a.m., the Hackensack Police Department responded to the intersection of Essex Street and Summit Avenue following reports of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
Upon arrival, officers found a 74-year-old male suffering from severe injuries. The vehicle involved had already fled the scene. The victim was rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center, but tragically, he was pronounced deceased shortly after. His identity is currently being withheld pending notification of his family.
The Investigation and Arrest
The search for the driver was a collaborative effort involving the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Hackensack Police Department. Investigators determined that a 2021 Honda Pilot, operated by Hedden, was traveling west on Essex Street when it struck the pedestrian crossing Summit Avenue.
According to officials, Hedden did not stop to render aid or report the collision. However, law enforcement was able to locate the vehicle and apprehend Hedden later that same day.

Hedden has been transported to the Bergen County Jail as he awaits his first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.
