Ridgewood resident Matt Bombace figured he had two options.

The Ridgewood firefighter and Iraq war veteran could either sit back and watch indifference claim the Washington Elm Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 192, or he could step up to the plate.

So when former commander Stanley Kober announced his retirement last month in an email to Post 192’s membership, Bombace, a 26-year-old student, replied he wanted to get more involved.

“Stan’s email said he needed people to take over, or the post would be dissolved, and it turns out I was the only one who responded to the email,” said Bombace, who served two tours as a Marine in Iraq from 2005 to 2006 and from 2007 to 2008.
