CARLSTADT, NJ – A major three-alarm fire tore through a commercial warehouse on Washington Avenue Friday morning, sending plumes of smoke across Bergen County and prompting a massive multi-agency emergency response.
While the blaze caused significant structural damage to two established local businesses, officials have confirmed that all employees were evacuated safely and no injuries were reported.
Emergency Response on Washington Avenue
The fire broke out at 690 Washington Avenue, a busy commercial hub in Carlstadt. Local reports began circulating around 10:30 a.m. when the Wallington Engine Company 202 confirmed they were on the scene for a mutual aid assignment.
As the fire escalated to three alarms, the sky turned gray over North Jersey, with commuters reporting heavy smoke visible from Route 17.
Businesses Impacted
The Carlstadt Police Department has identified two primary businesses affected by the fire:
-
Arena Stone
-
Interstate Equipment Repair
Thanks to the rapid intervention of first responders, the building was cleared before the flames could trap anyone inside. “Emergency responders worked quickly to ensure the safe evacuation of all employees from the building,” the Carlstadt Police stated in an official update.
Multi-Town Mutual Aid Defeats the Blaze
The scale of the fire required a coordinated effort from several Bergen County departments. In addition to Carlstadt’s finest, mutual aid was provided by:
-
Wallington Engine Company 202
-
Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department (Chiefs 61, 62, and Ladder 1)
-
Multiple surrounding North Jersey fire crews.
Investigation Underway
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Carlstadt Police Department have launched a joint investigation to determine the origin of the blaze at the 690 Washington Avenue facility.
Stay Tuned: We will update this story as more information regarding the cause of the fire and the status of the affected businesses becomes available.
