2011 Killer of Teaneck Man Gets Life in Prison

Teaneck NJ, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced that on November 3, 2023, SUI KAM “TONY” TUNG of New York City, NY was sentenced to life in New Jersey State Prison after being convicted of murder, aggravated arson, desecration of human remains, hindering apprehension, tampering with evidence, unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, and stalking in connection with the death of Robert Cantor in March 2011.

Sometime between 10:30 p.m. on March 5, 2011, and 1:00 a.m. on March 6, 2011, SUI KAM “TONY” TUNG entered Robert Cantor’s home, where he forced Mr. Cantor to the basement, shot him in the back of the head with a .380 caliber handgun, and then set Mr. Cantor’s body and house on fire.  TUNG then fled the scene and returned to New York City where he spent hours destroying computer evidence.

On July 27, 2023, a jury convicted SUI KAM “TONY” TUNG of the murder of Mr. Cantor, as well as aggravated arson, desecration of human remains, hindering apprehension, tampering with evidence, unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, and stalking.  On November 3, 2023, the Honorable Christopher R. Kazlau, J.S.C., sentenced TUNG to life in New Jersey State Prison, subject to the No Early Release Act, for his crimes.

The State was represented by Assistant Prosecutor David Malfitano and Assistant Prosecutor Joseph Torre, Detective Carl Holmsen, and Victim Witness Advocate Michelle Churchill of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.  Prosecutor Musella thanks Assistant Prosecutors Malfitano and Torre for their zealous advocacy for the victim and his family and for helping combat crimes of violence in Bergen County.  Prosecutor Musella also commends the detectives of the Major Crimes Unit as well as members of the Teaneck Police Department for their skill and professionalism in investigating this matter.

  1. crime in 2011. trial in 2023. is that the NJ definition of a speedy trial?

    1. Absurd how a wealthy defendant can stall for so long.

    2. He had previously been found guilty and was incarcerated. Got a new trail and found guilty for the second time.
