As America prepares to celebrate its 235th birthday, a plurality of adults still sees the nation’s first president as its greatest founder.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of American adults shows that 43% say George Washington is the greatest founding father of our country, up 11 points from last year. Thomas Jefferson comes in second with 24% who see him has the greatest found father, followed by Benjamin Franklin with 16%.
Just five percent (5%) see both John Adams and James Madison as the greatest founding fathers. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
Washington has been at the top of this list since 2006.
Data released earlier shows that Americans continue to strongly believe in the nation’s founding ideals articulated in the Declaration of Independence. While most believe that governments derive their only just authority from the consent of the governed, only 23% believe the federal government today has such consent.
In fact, 45% believe that the gap between Americans who want to govern themselves and politicians who want to rule over them is now as big as the gap between the American colonies and England during the 18th Century.

The 4th of July has been an important holiday but today, more and more people do not know why we actually celebrate this day. If you are not up to date on your history of the United States, July 4th, 1776 is the day that the colonies decided to declare themselves independent of Britain. By writing a very detailed decree, they decided that they no longer would need to be governed by the Kings of England that had been so very unjust to the colonists in the years before. On July 4th, America was born. We call the 4th of July Independence Day because this day was the day they declared independence from Great Britain.
We celebrate the fact that we are a free nation that is no under the rule of another. But, there is more to the celebration of independence than just the fact that this is the birthday of the United States. In fact, there are many goals and ideas that are represented in this celebration that until this day we fight for and protect around the world.
The Declaration of Independence, the actual decree in which was signed the independence of the United States, stands as a symbol for all of the things that we, as Americans, believe in. What are the symbols that it stands for?
The right to live with the freedoms of religion, without persecution and with the ability to think and do for yourself.
The courage it takes to protect freedom. It took the individuals that signed the Declaration a great deal of courage to do so as they could have been hung for treason. We use this symbol as a means to remind us that courage is often needed in times when our freedoms are threatened.
A symbol that people can live in a country that is governed by its people and that every person in that country is a very important person for its well being.
We celebrate the 4th of July for a number of reasons. We talk about how the United States of America was born and how many have died for that to happen. We celebrate the fact that we, as a nation, want all people to be free. And, we realize that without the courage and bravery of all those that came before us, we would not have the freedoms that we hold so very dear to us.

A pedestrian was struck by a motor vehicle at the corner of East Ridgewood Avenue and North Maple Avenue at approximately 2:30 PM on Sunday, July 3rd. The victim suffered minor injuries and was transported to The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood by members of the Ridgewood Volunteer Ambulance Corps. The driver of the vehicle involved in the collision was issued one summons.

(CNSNews.com) – Forty-nine members of the U.S. House of Representatives–including the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, the chairman of the Republican Policy Committee and two presidential candidates–are pointing to evidence they say is “contradictory” to Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan’s confirmation testimony and calling for the House Judiciary Committee to investigate the matter.
The lawmakers also say they believe that evidence already made public shows that Kagan must recuse herself from any court cases involving the health care bill signed into law by President Barack Obama while she was serving as Obama’s solicitor general.
“We respectfully call upon the House Judiciary Committee to promptly investigate the extent to which U.S. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan was involved in preparing a legal defense of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) during her tenure as Solicitor General,” the 49 lawmakers wrote in a letter to Rep. Lamar Smith (R.-Texas), the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, and Rep. John Conyers (D.-Mich.), the ranking member of the committee.

My new study suggests a simple way to cut college tuition in half.

No sooner do parents proudly watch their children graduate high school than they must begin paying for college. As they write checks for upwards of $40,000 a year, they’ll no doubt find themselves complaining loudly about rising college costs—even asking: “Is it worth it?”
It’s a legitimate question. As college costs have risen wildly, the benefits of the degree seem less and less clear. Larger numbers of college graduates are taking relatively low-paying and low-skilled jobs.
The good news? There are ways to greatly ease the burden and make college more affordable, according to new data from the University of Texas at Austin.
In a study for the Center for College Affordability and Productivity, Christopher Matgouranis, Jonathan Robe and I concluded that tuition fees at the flagship campus of the University of Texas could be cut by as much as half simply by asking the 80% of faculty with the lowest teaching loads to teach about half as much as the 20% of faculty with the highest loads. The top 20% currently handle 57% of all teaching.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — The PGA TOUR and Barclays announced today that the major global financial services provider has signed a four-year extension as title sponsor of The Barclays, the first tournament in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup. The agreement extends the sponsorship through 2016 and will carry the PGA TOUR’s presence in the New York metropolitan area to 50 years, dating back to 1967. The Barclays 2011 will be held August 23-28 at Plainfield Country Club in Edison, N.J.
The course rotation is:

The Barclays will return to another recent host in 2014, Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, N.J. Ridgewood has hosted The Barclays twice: in 2008 when Vijay Singh won the title — and eventually the FedExCup — by defeating Kevin Sutherland and Sergio Garcia in a sudden-death playoff; and last year, when Matt Kuchar, also in a sudden-death playoff, hit his approach shot from the left rough to less than three feet from the hole to beat Martin Laird with a birdie. Ridgewood was founded in 1890 and is one of the oldest clubs in America. In addition to two installments of The Barclays, the course — another A.W. Tillinghast design — has hosted the 1935 Ryder Cup, 1974 U.S. Amateur, 1990 U.S. Senior Open and 2001 Senior PGA Championship.

I grew up in middle class Nassau county on Long Island. I was 5 when we celebrated America’s bicentennial. I remember how exciting the stories were about the Revolutionary War and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. America’s bicentennial is the first time I remember feeling love for my country.
We moved to western Suffolk county when I was 7. My family struggled to make ends meet. My… parents’ marriage buckled under the pressure of financial strain and they were divorced when I was 13. I played the trumpet and piano and was the drum major in my high school marching band. I was a good athlete.
Growing up, I was a self-taught student of history. I loved watching and reading about Ronald Reagan leading us in our global fight against communism and reading about other American struggles for freedom – from the War for Independence, to the American Civil War, to our victory in WWII.
After my parents split up they both worked hard to establish themselves and they succeeded. My mother and step father started a staffing agency out on LI that grew with hard work, dedication, and perseverance into a successful business. More than once Mom was named one of LI’s most successful female business owners.
My father also struggled. He struggled to find his niche. But hard work also paid off for him. He is now a well known and firmly established forensic accountant. The life lessons I took away from their example have served me well.
After high school, I went to a community college on LI and held a series of odd jobs. I then made a big decision. I would leave the northeast and attend college in Tucson at the University of Arizona. I graduated with a BS in Finance placing a heavy emphasis on economics.
It was in Arizona in the early 1990s where I became a conservative. Reading Ayn Rand, Barry Goldwater, Milton Friedman, and F.A. Hayek, I began to realize that government did not always have the answers, that intervention in free markets hindered growth and did not facilitate it, that individuals needed to be accountable for their actions, and that preserving our Constitutional republic was no easy task.
After graduating college, I toyed with becoming a stock broker and getting into politics. To help me with the latter I decided to go to law school. In law school I fell in love, this time with the law. I jumped in with both feet and excelled. I decided that politics would just be a hobby and I would become an attorney.
13 years later I am still practicing law – specializing in employee benefits litigation – and have argued cases in federal courts of appeals around the country.
My wife and I live with our two children in Ridgewood, NJ.
As an avid student of history and economics, amateur political theorist, and believer in limited government, I have watched as government has become more and more entrenched and intrusive and has squandered more and more of our nation’s wealth.
Our Government’s response to the financial crisis got my juices flowing. I watched
Congress bail out private industry, run up massive deficits, take over vast new swaths of the private sector, and incur a mountain of debt that my children and their children will spend their lifetimes paying off. I could no longer sit idly by and allow government to destroy this country that I feel so strongly about.
I am running for the US Senate to:
-Restore the federal government to its Constitutional limits.
-Rein in out of control spending to pay down our debt.
-Support entitlement reform that will give control over Medicaid to the states, eliminate bureaucratic inefficiencies in Medicare, and give people more control over their Social Security to bring down the costs of these programs and preserve them for the future.
-Support a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution.
-Support progrowth tax reform which will bring down corporate, individual, and capital gains rates which will create jobs and grow the economy.
-Advocate for an American energy policy that will end our dependence on foreign oil and tap our domestic resources to bring down the cost of oil and create American jobs.
-Repeal and replace Obamacare with a law that actually addresses the out of control cost of healthcare.
-Be an outspoken advocate for Israel.
-Support school choice in DC and return control of our schools to the states.

Research funding is not the problem. It is a revenue source, not a cost. The following, however, are some of the issues that have driven tuition higher:
1. A construction arms race, with universities spending millions and millions building fancier and fancier dorms, gyms, stadiums, and dining facilities that have nothing to do with teaching. Students today have far more amenities than they did 30 or 40 years ago.
2. Significantly increased costs of varsity athletic programs. Very few schools make money on their sports programs.
3. Significant declines in state funding. Because of the state budget cuts that have occurred during the past decade, most state schools receive less funding as a % of their total costs, and have to raise tuition to make up the difference.
4. Sharply higher healthcare costs for faculty and staff. Longer lifespans have also increased pension costs

(June 30, 2011 – Hancocks Bridge, NJ) – The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approved PSEG Nuclear’s request today to extend the operating licenses of Salem Generating Station Units 1 and 2 an additional 20 years.
“The license renewal of Salem is part of our ongoing commitment to provide safe, reliable energy to New Jersey and the region,” said Tom Joyce, president and chief nuclear officer of PSEG Nuclear. “Today’s milestone is the direct result of our employees past and present who have played a key role in our success.”
PSEG Nuclear filed its request for license renewal in August 2009. During the past two years, a dedicated team coordinated site inspections and audits by the NRC, provided volumes of additional information to the regulator and participated in several meetings where the public was provided with opportunities to offer comment on the proposed license extension.
“Many members of the public came out to support us during this process, speaking during the public meetings and writing letters supporting our continued operation,” explained Joyce. “We are pleased that the community continues to have confidence in our operation and we will work hard to maintain their trust over the extended life of the stations.”
Each Salem unit has a net generating capacity of approximately 1175 megawatts. Salem Unit 1’s previous 40 year operating license was set to expire in 2016 with Unit 2’s operating license expiring in 2020. The plants will now be licensed through 2036 and 2040 respectively.
Under the Atomic Energy Act, the NRC originally issued licenses for commercial nuclear reactors for 40 years. This timeframe was based on the amortization period generally used by electric utility companies for large capital investments.
The NRC is also expected to announce a decision within the next few weeks regarding the license renewal of PSEG Nuclear’s single unit Hope Creek Generating Station.
Located together on a 740-acre site in Lower Alloways Creek, Salem County, the two Salem units and Hope Creek comprise the second largest commercial nuclear power facility in the United States. Together the three nuclear units generate enough power for approximately three million homes each day.
In New Jersey, nuclear power has played a leading role in meeting the state’s energy needs. In fact, more than 50 percent of the state’s electricity comes from nuclear power.
Salem and Hope Creek are subject to an ongoing, rigorous program of oversight and inspection by the NRC, led by four full-time inspectors onsite, as well as supplemental inspectors from the NRC regional headquarters. The plants also have their own extensive programs in preventive and corrective maintenance, equipment testing and monitoring and equipment replacement.
Over the past five years, PSEG Nuclear has invested more than $525 million in equipment upgrades and enhancements to ensure the continued safe operation of the two Salem units.
In addition to license renewal, PSEG Nuclear continues to explore the possibility of building an additional nuclear plant in Salem County. In May 2010, the company filed an application for an early site permit (ESP). Though not a commitment to build, the ESP would recognize the proposed location to be suitable from a safety, environmental and emergency planning standpoint. An NRC decision on the ESP is not expected until late 2013.

In US v. Wong Kim Ark, the US District Attorney argued that Ark was not a citizen because his parents were aliens. Ark was a person from the other “class” discussed in Minor whose citizenship was in doubt. Since Wong Kim Ark was not a natural-born citizen, his citizenship could not be determined by Article 2 Section 1. Therefore, the Supreme Court looked to the 14th Amendment to grant Wong Kim Ark US citizenship.
Again, if Wong Kim Ark had been a natural-born citizen, the Supreme Court would never have reached the 14th Amendment issue (just as it didn’t reach it in Minor.)
The Court determined Wong Kim Ark was a “citizen” under the 14th Amendment, but in doing so the Court did not expand the “class” of persons who were eligible to be President. This is because the Court specified clearly that it was only construing the 14th Amendment, not Article 2 Section 1. Article 2 Section 1 and the 14th Amendment are mutually exclusive sections of the US Constitution.
ONLY NATIONAL LAW MAKES BINDING PRECEDENT.
The Supreme Court’s definition of the natural-born citizen clause in Minor is not common law, natural law, or international law. Vattel is not cited by the Supreme Court in Minor. And Vattel does not make US law. The Court’s holding in Minor is national law. It is United States law.
Those other sources may have been consulted, but when the Court held that Minor was a citizen under Article 2 Section 1 because she was born in the US of citizen parents, that definition became national law. Therefore, Minor supersedes all other sources on this point. It is a direct Constitutional interpretation and definition.
The other sources are not necessary. Relying upon them actually weakens the authority of Minor. There is no need for insecurity in the face of supporting Supreme Court precedent.
On November 22, 2008, Justice Scalia addressed the Federalist Society, stating:
“Natural law has nothing to do with originalism. I mean, I believe in natural law, but unfortunately I have no way to show or demonstrate that my understanding of it is the same as yours, or is the same as anybody else’s. I don’t enforce natural law. I suppose God enforces natural law. I enforce United States law. United States law should not contravene natural law, but that’s not my problem… I worry about, ‘What does this text mean?’ ” (Emphasis added.)
Earlier in that same speech, Justice Scalia stated:
“What has happened can only be compared to the naive belief that we used to have in the common law… Erie Railroad, you know, blows that all away… and we sort of chuckle at how naive the world could have been ever to have thought there was a common law…”
Do not get sidetracked by extraneous theoretical sources. We have United States Supreme Court precedent which defines a natural-born citizen – under Article 2 Section 1 – as a person born on US soil to parents who were citizens. Neither Obama nor McCain fit that definition. Neither are eligible to be President.
While some may argue McCain was eligible based upon a reference to Vattel, McCain simply does not fit the strict US Supreme Court definition of natural-born citizen as defined in Minor. To fashion an exception for McCain not found in the actual text from Minor is purely partisan and unfair.
Unlike others commenting on eligibility, I have always maintained that both McCain and Obama were not eligible. I brought my law suit all the way to the Supreme Court – prior to the election – arguing against both candidates’ eligibility. I was the first person to raise this issue with the American people. And I hold them both accountable for the damage done to our Constitution as a result of neither having more concern for themselves than they did for the nation.
