>Readers Skeptical of Shared Services

>Readers Skeptical of Shared Services

I grew up and bought my first house in York County Pennsylvania which is made of seventy-two different municipalities from small quaint boroughs where everybody knows everyone else to large urban communities such as Hanover and the City of York. Back in the 1990’s many of the communities were sold on the concept of shared services, most notable regional police as a way to save money and get better service. Though I moved here 15 years ago my family is still lives in the York County community of Glen Rock PA (never knew Glen Rock NJ existed until I moved to Ridgewood!). Both my father and late uncle were very active in the community.

Twenty years later none of the communities has seen the savings that were promised. The large start up costs for professional services (lawyers, financial people, equipment, oversight boards, etc) were funded in exchange for a projected long term savings that never came to pass. No one could ever tell us exactly what they expected us to save, but theorized that shared management, personnel and equipment costs would be lower in the long run. The main regional forces in York County are the Southern Regional Police Department and York Area Regional Police.

Now towns are all fighting with each other over the costs of the regional forces. Each town provides representatives to Police Commissions which is always a local controversy as none of them get along. Towns are rationing hours of police coverage (the amount of hours a police car is actual on patrol in your community), accusing each other of having residents who call the police too often or involving the police in things the other towns don’t want to pay for such as monitoring school traffic or the local gas station where teenagers hang out and get rowdy. The towns are billed based upon hours of patrol coverage and number of calls.

Some of the towns are now considering withdrawal from their regional forces (under the threat of lawsuits from the other towns) and seeking coverage from the State police. The draw back is that the State police respond only to crimes and crashes. They do not enforce local ordinances and will not deal with traffic or parking issues. Their response time is 20 to 40 minutes as opposed to the regional police who can respond to an emergency in 5 or 10 minutes. The two times I have called the police since moving to Ridgewood they were at my door in less than 5 minutes!

Sales of UP3 parking permits on the upswing in Ridgewood

THURSDAY DECEMBER 29, 2011, 12:52 PM
BY MATT YANOFSKY
CORRESPONDENT
THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

When the Village of Ridgewood announced it would begin selling unlimited parking passes, commuters parking their vehicles in the downtown area for an extended period of time no longer had to feel weighed down – literally.

Before the Unlimited Prepaid Parking Permit (UP3) – the 2012 version took effect Dec. 15 – owners of vehicles parked in metered lots had to constantly feed the machine coins or risk getting a ticket. Now they have the hassle-free option to park in any of five designated parking lots throughout the day.

New Ridgewood crosswalks designed to be both decorative and safe

Ridgewood introduced a host of crosswalk upgrades throughout the Central Business District (CBD) on Friday with a facelift to the intersection of East Ridgewood Avenue and Cottage Place.

New crosswalks in the Central Business District are a bright red color to alert both motorists and pedestrians.
The new decorative crosswalks, which are characterized by a brighter red color and brick pattern finish, are designed to increase pedestrian safety in the downtown area, which has been a priority for village officials and police following an increase in pedestrian accidents.

“The purpose of the crosswalks is really to delineate the crosswalks for both pedestrians and the cars,” said Ridgewood Mayor Keith Killion. “It makes them stand out a little bit, grabs your attention a little bit more, and instead of painting them solid yellow or whatever, this is a little more fitting with the downtown area.”

>Ridgewood official offers a list of priorities for Ridgewood in the new year

>Ridgewood official offers a list of priorities for Ridgewood in the new year

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2011
BY COUNCILMAN PAUL ARONSOHN
THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

The Village Council’s agenda is always full. The issues range in size. They range in cost. But all the issues are important to someone … somewhere, and they all vie for the same increasingly limited set of resources.

With that in mind, the Village Council should seize the occasion of the New Year and establish a set of priorities for 2012 that reflect the needs of our community and speak to our obligation to provide good, responsive, effective government.

The greatest priority should be given to those things that we “must” do – those things that affect the public safety and financial security of the Village. And to the extent possible, we should also pay close attention to those things that we “should” do – those things that have a direct impact on residents’ quality of life.

Below are my top three priorities in each category.

New Year’s Eve sees weak demand in North Jersey so far

THE RECORD

With New Year’s Eve two days away, many area restaurants are not yet fully booked for the festivities as a weak economy continues to dampen spending and consumers keep a sharp eye out for bargains.

This Jan. 1, 2011 file photo shows fireworks as they erupt from a building to signal the New Year, 2011, in Times Square in New York.
“Things are not back to where they were,” said Ricardo Salazar, head of marketing and sales for Medieval Times in Lyndhurst, which will host a New Year’s Eve jousting exhibit, roasted half-a-chicken dinner and midnight balloon drop.

Salazar said that as of Tuesday afternoon, Medieval Times had sold 564 tickets for the venue that seats more than 1,300.

While the adult ticket price is $70, sales for this New Year’s Eve event have been driven in part by deep discounts for groups of 10 or more and children under 12 years old, he said. “The consumer is very price-driven,” he said.

>Passaic County Freeholder Director Terry Duffy is exploring 5th District run against Scott Garrett

Passaic County Freeholder Director Terry Duffy announced he is forming an exploratory committee for a potential 5th District congressional bid.

In a statement, Duffy said he will meet with residents of the newly drawn district over the next 30 days in an effort to decide if challenging incumbent Republican U.S. rep. Scott Garrett is feasible.
“Our priority needs to be unseating Congressman Garrett – who now becomes the most vulnerable incumbent Congressman in New Jersey with this new map,” Duffy said in a statement. ” I look forward to challenging his extremist record with pragmatic common sense solutions.”  (Isherwood, PolitickerNJ)

>Mekong Grill in Ridgewood

>Mekong Grill in Ridgewood

Tired of the same old Asian places? Had enough raw fish and greasy chinese for a while?? Looking to try some new, healthier Asian dishes?

We here in Bergen County are lucky enough to now have an authentic but more upscale option to the regular Vietnamese restaurants in Chinatown and throughout NYC/NJ. Best of all it’s very reasonable and BYOB.

In the lovely town of Ridgewood, we now welcome the Mekong Grill and Chef Tai Nham. He is from the same family who has owned and operated the unassuming but very popular ‘Vietnam Restaurant’ in Spring Valley , NY. Aficionado’s such as myself and many others we know, often went there for great food and also to the now closed ‘Little Saigon’ in Montclair. This place in Ridgewood is a dream come true for lovers of Vietnamese food! Chef Nai and his family are wonderful, gracious people and their restaurant is new and inviting, the service is friendly and knowledgeable and reservations are suggested on Friday and Saturday nights. Chef Nai graduated top of his class from the Culinary Institute. His authentic family recipes definitely have benefited from his education and experience, as you will see in the creativity and flair of every dish.

>Is it time for the ‘castle doctrine’ in New Jersey ?

>Is it time for the ‘castle doctrine’ in New Jersey ?

The ‘castle doctrine’ as in Texas. “Shoot the burglar’ and they won’t do it again.

NJ laws favor the burglar. If you shoot an unarmed burglar, you are going to jail. Sad but true. The stupid law in NJ requires the homeowner to have ‘no reasonable means of egress’. That means you are supposed to jump out a 2nd floor window. Typical liberal jerkoff state of NJ that favors criminals instead of honest taxpayers.

Honest homeowners should be allowed to shoot a burglar, whether they are armed or unarmed. This will be an uphill battle and would take a long time.

In the short run, I also would like to give the police the tools they are asking for – longer penalties for burglaries. Getting a few career criminals away for a few years can make a big difference.

If the bigger penalties don’t make a difference, there is an even stronger argument for the “castle doctrine”

>Reader says worst bullies are some teachers

>Reader says worst bullies are some teachers

The worst bullies at school who get away with the most damage to innocent students are the teachers. Our school administrators and superintendent have been provided with all kinds of evidence of this, and with the same teachers over and over, year after year, and these teachers still have their jobs and access to more innocent children to take out their neurosis on.

Its time to start DYFS files on all of them. That’s the only way to stop this from happening. DYFS will gladly take info on any current complaints of abuse against school age children, emotional or physical, and so will the police.

>The Anti Bullying law is another knee-jerk reaction to an unfortunate suicide by a legislator looking for a pat on the back

>The Anti Bullying law is another knee-jerk reaction to an unfortunate suicide by a legislator looking for a pat on the back

HIB is another nail in the coffin to preparing kids to stand up for themselves and learning about the adult world where there are no such protections.

This law is another knee-jerk reaction to an unfortunate suicide by a legislator looking for a pat on the back by yuppie parents who want the state to help raise their children.

Do your kids a favor, teach them to fight for themselves and stand-up to what they believe instead of letting them take it and expecting others to take care of the problem for them. Were raising a bunch of wusses who are going to get trampled on come college by kids who grew up without such protections, like YOU AND I did growing up.

>N.J. survey shows local governments turned to shared services, surplus funds to hold 2 percent property tax cap

>N.J. survey shows local governments turned to shared services, surplus funds to hold 2 percent property tax cap

The governments of New Jersey cities and towns turned to sharing public services and using surplus funds to comply with a new state mandate that property taxes can increase by no more than 2 percent annually.
The actions come to light in an annual Legislative Priorities Survey conducted by the New Jersey State League of Municipalities which garnered the responses of over 100 mayors. The responses to specific issues provide direction for League staff to take when lobbying the Legislature in Trenton.
This year was the first budget year that municipal officials had to comply with the 2 percent property tax levy cap.  (Hester, New Jersey Newsroom)

Would you be outraged if the Department of Justice shut down The Foundry without any warning and blocked access for more than a year?
That’s exactly what happened to a hip-hop blog called Dajaz1.com, which was falsely accused of criminal copyright infringement. The blog posted music from artists promoting their work. But federal authorities viewed it differently. They seized the domain name, then shared virtually no information with its owner for more than year. Only recently did they quietly drop the case.

The government’s handling of this hip-hop blog is fueling fears about legislation moving quickly through Congress that addresses copyright infringement and online piracy.

The Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA as it’s known in the House, and the Senate’s PROTECT IP Act would give the U.S. attorney general the power and authority to block criminal enterprises from trafficking in illegal products online.

Their cause is a noble one. Business incur significant losses when Americans buy counterfeit items. Consumers must also be increasingly vigilant about purchases they make online. Federal authorities shut down more than 150 websites just last month for pirated goods.
