National Weather Service Follows DHS In Huge Ammo Purchase

Hollow point bullets designed to cause maximum organ damage

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

Why would the National Weather Service need to purchase large quantities of powerful ammo? That’s the question many are asking after the federal agency followed in the footsteps of the Department of Homeland Security in putting out a solicitation for 46,000 rounds of hollow point bullets.

A solicitation which appears on the FedBizOpps website asks for 16,000 rounds of .40 S&W jacketed hollow point (JHP) bullets, noted for their strength, to be delivered to locations in Ellsworth, Maine, and New Bedford, Mass.

A further 6,000 rounds of S&W JHP will be sent to Wall, New Jersey, with another 24,000 rounds of the same bullets heading to the weather station in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The solicitation also asks for 500 paper targets to be delivered to the same locations in Maine, Massachusetts and New Jersey.

Trenton looks to pick Winner for states lottery
August 14,2012
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, The state of New Jersey looking for bids for the right to run the state’s massive lottery .

The winning bid could fetch over $120 million up front and a share of profits annually, according to The Asbury Park Press, which first reported on the plan. The winner could see potential profits of over $1 billion for the length of the contract that would run from next year until 2029.

The NJ Lotter is the 8th largest in the US . Former Gov. Jon Corzine’s administration had explored the idea of letting a private company run the lottery previously . Last years a task force recommended the change to Gov. Chris Christie . Several other states like Illinois have outsourced their lottery operations and more states are also looking into privatization.

‘Texting Thumb’ A Growing Health Condition
August 13, 2012 11:47 AM

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – If you’re an active cell phone user, you may be developing a growing health condition: texting thumb.

According to Jefferson University Hospital, texting thumb—a form of tendinitis in the thumbs—is one of the most common ailments seen by hand specialists today.

Dr. Eon Shin, a Jefferson orthopedic surgeon, says the increasing use of cell phones and computers have led to the overuse of our hands and wrists, leading to a rise in “techno-injuries,” especially among gen-Xers.

Fortunately, texting thumb can be treated fairly simply.

According to Dr. Shin, most people with texting thumb can treat it with simple rest or physical therapy..

Reminder – Village of Ridgewood Electronics Waste Must be Recycled!

Reminder – Village of Ridgewood Electronics Waste Must be Recycled!

New Jersey has significantly revised its regulations to enact a disposal ban on electronics as solid waste. Effective January 1, 2011, the Electronic Waste Management Act (NJSA 13:1E-99.94 et seq.) requires that all “used covered electronic devices” be recycled. The law defines a “used covered electronic device” as a desktop or personal computer, computer monitor, portable computer, or television sold to a consumer.

Electronic equipment is accepted at the Ridgewood Recycling Center at 205 East Glen Avenue. The computer and electronic recycling program provided at the Recycling Center, is at no cost to the Village, and provides an easy option for residents to recycle their computers and electronics. Upon arrival at the Recycling Center, each resident may place their computer components and electronic devices into our convenient walk-in container.

Accepted items (which must NOT be setout for curbside pickup, nor placed in household trash) include:

• Computers (Desktop or Portable) • Printers

• Televisions • Keyboards

• Monitors • Scanners

• Fax Machines • Keyboards

• Televisions • Speakers

• Stereo Equipment • Modems

• Electronic Mouse • Cell Phones

• Desktop Copy Machines • Power Sources

• Hard Drives • VCRs

• DVD players • Video Game Consoles

The Recycling Center at 205 East Glen Avenue has the following, convenient hours:

Monday – Saturday 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Ridgewood residents have always embraced recycling for its cost avoidance and environmental benefits. As a result, Ridgewood has enjoyed a savings of over $12.8 million, since New Jersey mandated recycling in 1987. As a community, may all continue to work together towards the goal of responsible environmental practices and greater reductions in solid waste.

Youth driving laws limit even the double date

Youth driving laws limit even the double date

It is a rite of American teendom, celebrated in popular culture by “American Graffiti” and “Fast Times at Ridgemont High”: a teenager with a driver’s license piling as many friends as will fit into the car for a ride.

But increasingly, states are legislating away that carefree cruise, passing laws that restrict when, how and with whom teenagers can get behind the wheel.

Fifteen states and the District of Columbia now prohibit teenagers from driving with another teenager, and all but seven states forbid them from driving with more than one. In South Carolina, teenagers cannot drive after 6 p.m. in winter (8 p.m. in summer), and in Idaho, they are banned from sundown to sunup.   (Zernike, The New York Times)

Obama Campaign disses Newark Mayor Cory Booker

After miscue, refined role for Booker

Since Mayor Cory Booker called attacks on private equity “nauseating,” he hasn’t appeared once on national television as a surrogate for President Barack Obama. At the Democratic National Convention next month, one of the party’s rising stars won’t have a headlining speaking role.

Mr. Booker has moved to a mostly off-camera role for the president’s campaign after his unscripted remarks on May 20 about ads Mr. Obama was running about Bain Capital, the former company of presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney.

But the Newark mayor also remains a force for Mr. Obama, campaigning for the president in Michigan last week, hosting Democratic fundraisers and helping to draft the party’s platform for the convention in Charlotte, N.C.  (Haddon, The Wall Street Journal)

Chris Christie to give RNC keynote

Chris Christie, the sometimes abrasive but always entertaining governor of New Jersey, is set to be announced Tuesday as the keynote speaker for the Republicans’ national convention later this month.

Christie, who considered a 2012 presidential bid of his own before endorsing former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, is already at work on his speech to the convention in Tampa, Fla. His record of cutting his state’s budget, curtailing public sector unions and dealing with a Democratic legislature with disarming and combative confidence all were expected to be on display as he looked to fire up his party’s base.

The scheduling decision was first reported online by USA Today early Tuesday and confirmed by Republican officials directly involved in convention planning. The Republican officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because the formal announcement was not planned until later Tuesday.  (Associated Press)

Ridgewood’s public works department has recently taken two measures to increase sidewalk safety in the village.
A new sidewalk on Northern Parkway is being constructed after years of advocacy by several residents aiming to increase safety on the grassy strip beside Graydon Pool and Maple Park Turf Field.

Additionally, 160 residents received notices this summer requiring them, within 45 days, to replace sidewalks that have been deemed incompliant with Americans with Disabilities Act standards, according to the Department of Public Works (DPW).

The project on Northern Parkway should be completed within the next couple weeks, depending on weather, said Village Engineer Chris Rutishauser.

Building two parking garages with retail and a large box store combined with 180 Apt on S Broad St , 80 apt. on Chestnut street and who knows how many apartments on Maple Ave.now with all this long term construction going on and the congestion that accompanies these projects who is going to want to shop in Ridgewood?

Do they real thing that this is going to take 30 days to do? This will deal a death blow for any of the store who are just hanging .

People avoid the CBD now because of the congestion . What about pedestrian safety? According to the The Magnificent 7 and the Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce ” Its all good.”

Traffic changes in Ridgewood are approved

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

With the exception of one proposal, changes to traffic laws on streets near Ridgewood public schools approved by Village Council have been met with general applause from the public.

The streets with sections slated for law changes are Bedford Road, West Ridgewood Avenue, Dean Street, Bogert Avenue, Fairfield Avenue, Downs Street, Houston Lane and North Hillside Place.

According to the current amendment proposal, left turns are prohibited within certain school hours at the Bedford intersection with Morningside Road and the West Ridgewood Avenue intersection with North Hillside Place.

Additionally, a stop sign will be added on Dean Street at the South Broad Street intersection; parking will be prohibited at all times on a section of the west side of Bogert Avenue and during certain hours for sections on the east side of Fairfield Avenue and the west side of Bogert Avenue. There will be no stopping or standing during certain hours on sections differing from past mandates on Houston Lane, Downs Street and North Hillside Place.

Other traffic mandates in Chapter 265 may be deleted, including a “no stopping or standing during certain hours” ordinance on a section of Fairfield Avenue.

“The whole ordinance was tailored to what the school safety committee had requested,” said Village Engineer Chris Rutishauser.

Suffering its worst ratings in 20 years, CNN is going Hollywood.

In the past few weeks, the No. 3 cable news channel has started seeking out reality-show ideas and big-name stars not afraid to talk politics. They have even begun working on a late-night talk show, The Post has learned.

Convinced that its current programming badly needs updating, CNN execs have been making the rounds of Hollywood’s top talent agencies — something entertainment networks do several times a year but a first for the old-line news channel.

In a series of conference calls, the network has also been soliciting ideas from the same producers who supply reality shows to channels like Bravo, Discovery and History, according to sources.

NJ jobless are running out of unemployment checks

NJ jobless are running out of unemployment checks

Cheryl Butts knew her unemployment benefits weren’t supposed to last forever, but when she received notice last month that she would abruptly be cut off, an alarm went off.

Gone in a flash was $533 a week, with little to fall back on and few expenses left to cut.

With unemployment benefits, “I was able to manage,” Butts, 67, of Neptune, said. “It wasn’t as much as I made when I was working, but it paid for rent, car insurance and the car note. You scrimp and save and manage to get through, but that was twenty-something hundred dollars a month I don’t have.”

Butts could be a sign of things to come. Thousands of New Jersey residents are at risk of losing unemployment benefits through programs that were extended during the Great Recession. With the job market still sluggish, they have taken sometimes drastic steps. And they are nervous about what’s in store.  (Diamond, Asbury Park Press)
