Roger Goodell : The health and safety of players at all levels of the game is our first priority

Goodell theridgewoodblog.net

To NFL Fans:

Like you, we are ready to get “Back to Football.” And like you, we want to help ensure that young athletes participating in sports this fall are playing safely.

The health and safety of players at all levels of the game is our first priority. Among our most important initiatives is helping athletes and their coaches know the signs and symptoms of concussion; and what to do if they suspect an athlete has a head injury. Through the leadership of our NFL Head, Neck and Spine Committee and partnerships with organizations like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), we are finding new ways to protect players, adapt to scientific discoveries, and promote a culture of safety.

We applaud USA Football, the sport’s national governing body and the expert in player development and coaching education, on the launch this week of its Heads Up Football program, a health and safety resource for parents, coaches and players.

As part of Heads Up Football, you can learn about the importance of properly fitted equipment, prevention and treatment of concussions from the CDC, youth football rules, and the basics of proper “Heads Up Tackling.” To learn more, visit usafootball.com.

We are committed to the safety of young athletes, no matter what sport they play. This off-season, we announced our role in a multi-partner youth football helmet replacement program for underserved communities. The initiative will replace helmets that are 10 years old or older with new helmets at no cost to beneficiary leagues. With our partners in this campaign, including the NFL Players Association, we committed a combined total of approximately $1 million to the program, which will provide thousands of new helmets to youth football players in low-income communities.

With the support of the NFL, youth concussion laws have been passed so far in 39 states and the District of Columbia, protecting young athletes from returning to play too soon. We will continue our advocacy for this law in the remaining states.

To learn more about our health and safety work for athletes of the past, present and future, visit nfl.com/evolution and look out for two televised messages that will debut this season. We join with you in celebrating the return of the game we all love. Here’s to a safe and exciting season.

Activists to take on Capitol Hill: Lay off our milk, lemonade

Milk and lemonade may seem like the staples of youthful innocence, but on Saturday a group of activists hope to turn them into the tools of protests when they take to the Capitol to demand the government stop interfering in sales of fresh milk and stop shutting down kids’ lemonade stands.
The Raw Milk freedom Riders and Lemonade Freedom Day, two separate groups that each want the government out of their transactions, are unifying their voices, saying that together they can drive home a message that the government should butt out.

“This issue is not just about raw milk and it’s not just about lemonade. It’s about every individual’s right to consume the food of their choice,” said Robert Fernandes, founder of Lemonade Freedom Day.

The food freedom movement has grown dramatically in recent years, spurred by consumers looking for alternatives to supermarkets and big-brand items — and has faced pressure from local authorities, in the case of lemonade stands, and from federal authorities in the case of milk.
The Food and Drug Administration has deemed unpasteurized milk harmful and, while it cannot interfere with sales in the 30 or so states that allow them, it can prevent farmers, stores and coops from selling across lines to states where fresh milk is illegal.

Democrats’ nerves start to show as Ryan fires up conservative voters

Democrats’ nerves start to show as Ryan fires up conservative voters
The Republican candidate was kept on the back foot for weeks but in choosing Paul Ryan, Romney is looking to his core vote

After the 2008 Sarah Palin debacle, Mitt Romney was understandably keen to pick a very different kind of vice-presidential running mate. Instead of a relatively inexperienced governor of an outlying state, in Paul Ryan the Republican presidential candidate has gone for a consummate political professional with 14 years of congressional experience under his belt.

But while Ryan is unlikely to have embarrassing, flustered moments in television studios when asked to list the daily newspapers he reads, he is proving every bit as controversial and polarising as his Alaskan predecessor.

The Democrats have dubbed him a “certifiably rightwing ideologue”, claiming he is out to destroy America’s modest welfare programmes.

Usually, vice-presidential candidates have only a few days in the media spotlight before retreating into obscurity, apart from one VP nationally televised debate in October. Palin did not follow that pattern and neither does Ryan, who after less than a week in the job has redefined the campaign and looks likely to go on doing so.

The Romney campaign chose him to deliver the Republican base vote amid fears that die-hard conservatives could cost him the White House by staying at home on election day rather than turning out for a candidate they are ambivalent about.

Kasschau Memorial Shell Concerts wrap up
FRIDAY, AUGUST 17, 2012
THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

Concerts wrap up

To The Editor:

The final performance of the Kasschau Memorial Shell Concerts was held on Aug. 2. It was a glorious night with a full moon and a warm breeze. Marlene VerPlanck was the performer that night. We are so fortunate to have a performer in Ridgewood who has sung with Frank Sinatra and Mel Tome and performed all over the world.

Other Kasschau Memorial Shell artists have performed at Carnegie Hall, the Oak Room at the Algonquin, the Garden State Arts Center and on the Tonight Show and have been seen on Broadway in Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables. The music performed at the various concerts is eclectic covering jazz, calypso, pop standards and Broadway Show Tunes.

These outdoor concerts begin in June and end in early August and our thanks go to the enthusiastic audiences that have ranged up to more than 600 a performance. Volunteer members of the Kasschau Memorial Shell Committee give of their time to arrange for these musical presentations and the Recreation Department of Ridgewood facilitates their work. Greg Gallo and his assistant John Gilmore are responsible for the excellent and professional sound and lighting.

It is through the generosity of our sponsors that we are able to have musicians of such a high level of professionalism entertain at these free concerts. We wish to acknowledge and thank the following sponsors:

Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill, Boiling Springs Savings Bank, Clemente Orthodontics, Care One at the Cupola & Care One at Pine Rest, Caldwell Banker Residential Brokerage Corp., Columbia Bank, Daily Treat Restaurant, Feeney Funeral Home, Hudson City Savings Bank, Keller Williams – Ridgewood, Kings Supermarkets, Park West Tavern, Rotary Club of Ridgewood AM, Ridgewood Dentistry – Warren Boardman DMD, The Ridgewood News, Tarvin Realtors, TD Bank, Ulrich, Inc. Senator Joe Kyrillos : Raising Revenue the Smart Way: Lowering Taxes

Senator Joe Kyrillos : Raising Revenue the Smart Way: Lowering Taxes

Let’s be clear: there’s a big difference between increasing revenue by raising taxes and increasing revenue from lowering taxes while closing special interest loopholes. Raising tax rates continues to be Bob Menendez’ solution, but after voting in favor of higher taxes more than 70 times it has yielded nothing but higher unemployment and crushing debt placed squarely on the shoulders of small businesses and middle class families. Throughout my career, I have never voted for a broad-based tax increase, and in fact have saved New Jerseyans $11.9 billion in new or higher taxes.

My position continues to be what I outlined in my comprehensive jobs plan – cut income tax rates for every family and small business, reduce our job-killing corporate tax and close the special interest tax loopholes favored by Bob Menendez’ lobbyist pals, including management fees that get treated as capital gains rather than personal income. A simpler, more efficient tax code will reward hard work, boost job creation, and raise revenue by growing the economy.

Record NJ Unemployment and N.J. politician pushes for law requiring pets buckle up on car rides

This one could have some Jersey canines howling with discontent.

If a lawmaker has her way, those carefree rides in cars with their heads out the window will be long gone. Instead, dogs — and cats — will have to be buckled up for safety, just like humans.

The measure is the brainchild of Assemblywoman Grace Spencer (D-Essex) who said she got the idea from a fourth-grade class at a Newark charter school and started pushing it after her veterinarian mentioned a small pooch who had broken a leg after its owner made a sudden stop.

If enacted, New Jersey would have the nation’s toughest seat belt law for pets.  (Friedman, The Star-Ledger)

N.J. investigating 27 possible security breaches in administration of standardized tests

THE RECORD

At a time when test scores are poised to play a more significant role in evaluating teachers, New Jersey education officials are reviewing reports of 27 security breaches from the administration of state tests this spring.

While that number involves a small share of the roughly 850,000 standardized tests that New Jersey public school students take each year, testing experts say the state Department of Education is right to take the breaches seriously.

John Fremer, president of Caveon Consulting Services, which advises states on preventing cheating, said it would be impossible to have no irregularities, and a couple of dozen incidents is a small number for an entire state. Even so, he said, there is cause for concern.

No One Will Charged With a Crime for the MF Global Collapse

No One Will Charged With a Crime for the MF Global Collapse
By Dashiell Bennett | The Atlantic Wire

Authorities are winding down their criminal investigation of the failed brokarage firm, MF Global, and despite the lack of oversight and the loss of more than $1 billion in customer funds, it now seems unlikely that anyone at the firm will face criminal charges.

The New York Times is reporting this morning that after ten months of investigation by federal prosecutors, sources say there isn’t even enough evidence to charge any of the firm’s executives in a criminal probe. The company may have failed spectacularly when it came to oversight and risk management, but the losses cannot be chalked up to outright fraud.

The company placed a grossly outsized bet (more than $6 billion worth) on the health of the European debt market last year and when it went south, the firm “borrowed” money from the accounts of its customers to try and salvage its own losses. Most of the blame for those trades fell on its CEO (and ex-New Jersey governor) Jon Corzine, and while his reputation and firm are ruined, it seems he will escape any legal sanction. He could still face massive civil lawsuits or fines from regulators who have a lower standard than a criminal prosecution, but jail isn’t in the cards.

New Jersey seeing its highest unemployment rate since 1977

Jobless rates rise in NY, NJ and Connecticut in July

(Reuters) – Jobless rates for New York, Connecticut and New Jersey all climbed in July, with New Jersey seeing its highest unemployment rate since 1977, according to data from the three neighboring states on Thursday.

New Jersey’s jobless rate rose for the fourth month in a row, to 9.8 percent, up from 9.6 percent in June and from 9.4 percent in July 2011, according to preliminary numbers from the state Department of Labor.

New York’s unemployment rate also increased from both June and the year-earlier month, rising to 9.1 percent. In June the jobless rate was 8.9 percent, and a year-ago July it was 8.2 percent, the state reported.

In Connecticut the unemployment rate climbed to 8.5 percent from 8.1 percent in June, but was down from 8.9 percent a year-ago.

For New York City, whose financial industry is the economic engine for the tri-state region, unemployment was unchanged at 10 percent in July, but still above year-ago levels when it was 9 percent, according to the data from the state’s Labor Department.

America’s first black governor Douglas Wilder tells Joe Biden: ‘Slavery is nothing to joke about.’

slavery theridgewooblog.net

America’s first black governor Douglas Wilder tells Joe Biden: ‘Slavery is nothing to joke about.’

America’s first black governor in modern times has become the most senior Democrat to break ranks over Joe Biden’s ‘y’all in chains’ comments, telling the Vice President: ‘Slavery is nothing to joke about.’

Douglas Wilder, who was governor of Virginia from 1990 to 1994 and the first black governor since Reconstruction, told CNN that ‘without question’ Biden’s remarks in Danville, Virginia (though the veep seemed to think he was in North Carolina) ‘were appeals to race’.

He continued: ‘The important thing I got out of this was Biden separated himself from what he accused the people of doing. As a matter of fact, what he said is they are going to do something to y’all, not to me. Not us. So he was still involved with that separate American.

‘As far as I am concerned, the President would not associate himself with those remarks. And I expect as the days go forward there will be more clarity associated with what the president feels about what Joe Biden said.

Postal Service Finances: Yes, It Can Get Worse

Postal Service Finances: Yes, It Can Get Worse
James Gattuso and Emily Goff
August 9, 2012 at 3:30 pm

It is becoming hard to keep the billions of dollars in missed payments and recorded losses by the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) straight. Today, tack another multibillion-dollar chunk of change onto the list: The USPS reported a third-quarter net loss of $5.2 billion, bringing year-to-date losses to $11.6 billion.

But increasingly, the focus of concern is when the USPS will run out of cash. With less than $500 million on hand, that day may come as early as October.

In a conference call today, postal management downplayed the cash-flow problem—pointing out that they may be able to delay a payment due to the Labor Department for worker’s compensation costs—and held out hope that election-year mailings will give them a boost. At any rate, they said that priority will be given to payroll obligations and suppliers in the event the tiller is emptied.

Most likely, the postal officials are right: Some way to fudge the shortfall will be found, pushing the day of reckoning into next year—assuming that Americans send Christmas cards liberally. But it’s never a good sign when a firm has to talk about making deals with creditors and prioritizing debts. It’s just more evidence that the USPS needs to change; if it doesn’t, it will die.

Postal officials, to their credit, recognize this. “This is no way to run a business,” said USPS CFO Joe Corbett, pointing out the need for swift action to address the problem.

Exactly. And that action needs to come from Congress, which has hamstrung USPS’s ability to make the restructuring and cutbacks that will be needed to give it a fighting chance at survival. But so far, Congress seems more interested in adopting “reforms” that simply give the USPS temporary infusions of cash while continuing or tightening statutory restrictions on real change. Real reform—such as that being pushed by Representative Darrel Issa (R–CA) and others—is a castor oil that Members don’t want to swallow.

No way to run a business, indeed.
