NJ Transit sent four employees to the Super Bowl in New Orleans — including a key rail official who was in charge of the Hoboken terminal when dozens of rail cars and locomotives, left to sit in low-lying yards, were damaged during superstorm Sandy — at a taxpayer cost of $14,505, expense reports show.

The bills, obtained by The Record through an Open Public Records Act request, include:

$7,800 for lodging from Jan. 31 through Feb. 4, 2013;
$5,241 for airfare;
$423 in miscellaneous expenses.

The intent of the visit was to ground NJ Transit officials in procedures used to handle transportation and security at the Super Bowl, using New Orleans as an example. Sent to tour the city were Rich Andreski, chief of staff of rail operations; Joseph Meade III, superintendent of the Hoboken rail operations; NJ Transit Police Officer Patrick Clark and police official Robert Gatchell. Also in attendance was Penny Bassett Hackett, the high-ranking assistant executive director for communications and customer service, though officials said she visited New Orleans on her own.

Our doctors are offering free dental screenings to look for any signs of disease in your pets’ teeth and gums.  More than 80% of our pets show signs of gum disease by age three and periodontal disease has been linked to heart, kidney, and liver problems, with potentially fatal results.

If your pet shows signs of dental disease, your veterinarian will give you a medical care plan with recommendations and an estimate of fees.  This includes a 20% discount on the dentistry AND all fees associated with the dental procedure, including pre-anesthetic bloodwork, EKGs, x-rays, anesthesia, and post-dental medication.  We are able to offer this discount with the help of our vendors in support of Pet Dental Month.

An appointment can be scheduled at your convenience, and basic dental cleanings will be offered at a discounted rate when scheduled within February or March.

There is no cost to find out if your pet is experiencing the pain of dental disease, so why wait?

Reader says Ridgewood residents swallow elephants but choke on flies

Amidst 4 large housing development, parking garages, secret meetings, 40 plus e-mail between 2 council members, attorneys and developers it seems the Council and residents concerns focus on “vicious dog” ordnance what ever that is .

By all appearances, the Mayor and his running mates are in favor of the 4 proposed housing developments which is their right. With this right, however comes the responsibility to tell their constituents why they favor such aggressive development. What’s the benefit to the Village? What’s in it for the tax payers? Why do you take the developers at their word that there will be no adverse impact to our community as a result of these projects? Until they answer these questions, there will be a legitimate suspicion of impropriety.

I think it is important to find out what ties the developers and their attorneys have to the community. There are some very cozy relationships involved…influenced pedlars abound.

Ridgewood safety committee suggests conditions for proposed housing developments

Concerned with four proposed housing developments for the Central Business District (CBD) area, the Citizens Safety Advisory Committee suggested to the Planning Board this week that developers agree to update the CBD’s current infrastructure issues as a “condition of their approval.”

According to the village’s traffic expert, John Jahr of Maser Consulting P.A., the developers have already agreed to improve aspects of the CBD’s current transportation infrastructure.

“They want to work together to improve the traffic conditions,” Jahr said. “They recognize they have an obligation.”

In a Feb. 5 letter addressed to Planning Board Chairman Charles Nalbantian, Councilwoman Bernie Walsh, the committee’s chairwoman, noted that in light of the proposals, several public safety concerns should be addressed in the CBD. The letter was read by Director of Public Works Chris Rutishauser, who is also a member of the Citizens Safety Advisory Committee, at Monday’s meeting.

RIDGEWOOD — The Village Council this week unanimously approved an ordinance increasing the licensing fee for those owning “potentially dangerous” dogs.

The ordinance — voted on during Wednesday night’s meeting — increases the fee for dogs deemed “potentially dangerous” by a Municipal Court to $700. The new law does not specify breeds.

Currently, the lowest annual fee for a dog license is $18, and it maxes out at $75 for a three-year license.

Before the matter went to a final vote, several animal advocates and professionals from around the area spoke in support of the formation of a new committee in Ridgewood, charged with promoting responsible pet ownership.

The Menendez Scandal: New Jersey Voters React

The Menendez Scandal: New Jersey Voters React
Embattled senator criticized by New Jersey pols, residents

New Jersey residents and local officials are uneasy about Sen. Bob Menendez (D., N.J.), the scrutiny he is under for possible ethical and moral improprieties, and his affiliation with a controversial ophthalmologist and wealthy donor.

Many of the New Jersey officials and constituents interviewed by the Free Beacon said Menendez is not being truthful about the flights he took on a private jet of controversial donor Dr. Salomon Melgen. Others said he abused his power as a senator in trying to enforce a Dominican Republic port security contract that benefitted the same donor.

Menendez should resign if the accusations are true, some constituents also said.

Reader says Common sense dictates significant impact on the Village from 4 new developments in the CBD

It’s beyond odd. How can we weigh 4 projects individually when their collective impact has not been considered? Common sense dictates that parking will be more difficult, schools will get more crowded, traffic will be worse and infrastructure will have to be upgraded.

Yet the Mayor and his running mates seem fine with the developers’ assertions that there will be no negative impact brought on by any one of these projects. How can that be? Something smells funny.

Looking for love in all the right places in New Jersey

Single? Looking for that special someone? Tired of the bar scene? Maybe you should move.

If you’re a guy, the best place to live in New Jersey is Somerset County, where women outnumber men 10 to nine. For gals, it’s definitely Sussex County, where there’s 13 men for every 10 women.

A study by Trulia found that among unmarried adults, 62 percent prefer to date someone who lives alone — not at home with their parents or with roommates. The real estate company compiled county-by-county data for The Star-Ledger to find out where those single men and women lived in New Jersey.

“Of course, we’re only talking about the quantity of men and women, not whether they’re your idea of a great date,” said Jed Kolko, Trulia’s chief economist.

NJ Transit said Wednesday that more rail cars and locomotives — 342 — were damaged by superstorm Sandy than originally thought and that the cost of the storm to the agency has risen to $450 million.

Originally, 323 pieces of equipment were reported as damaged and the costs of the storm was thought to be $400 million.

But even as the agency revised upwards its damage and cost estimates, officials could not say where the equipment would be placed if a similar storm were to occur in the near future

The Legend of St. Valentine

Cupid

The Legend of St. Valentine

The history of Valentine’s Day–and the story of its patron saint–is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?

The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl–possibly his jailor’s daughter–who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and–most importantly–romantic figure. By the Middle Ages, perhaps thanks to this reputation, Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France.

Five Democrats will compete for their party’s line to run for three seats on the Bergen County Board of Freeholders this year.

The Democratic candidates are:

Jim Tedesco, a former Paramus Mayor.
Christopher Tully, who is serving his second term as a Bergenfield councilman.
Lorraine Waldes, the president of the River Vale School Board.
Robert Kovic, a former Ridgefield councilman who previously worked in the County Counsel’s office.
Monica Honis, a former Teaneck councilwoman.

They will compete at the party’s county convention in March. The top three vote getters will face Republican incumbents Maura DeNicola, John Felice and John Mitchell all of whom are running for a second term.
