Ridgewood Water’s billing system is under renovation!

Ridgewood Water is currently implementing an improved billing and customer service program. During this change our Customer Service Representatives will provide you with the best service possible but there may be occasional delays in providing routine, corrected, and final bills.

Once the new system is fully operational, customers will have the option to receive their bills by email instead of conventional mail. E-bills and conventional bills will be payable by credit card and automatic bank transfer in addition to checks, money orders and cash.

We are excited to be bringing these improvements to our customers and have more features in development.

Senate Passes $3.7 Trillion Budget, Its First in 4 Years
Published: Saturday, 23 Mar 2013 | 5:24 AM ET
By: Jonathan Weisman

WASHINGTON — After a grueling, all-night debate that ended close to 5 a.m., the Senate on Saturday adopted its first budget in four years, a $3.7 trillion blueprint for 2014 that would fast-track passage of tax increases, trim spending gingerly and leave the government still deeply in the debt a decade from now.

The 50-49 vote sets up contentious — and potentially fruitless — negotiations with the Republican-dominated House in April to reconcile two vastly different plans for dealing with the nation’s economic and budgetary problems. No Republicans voted for the Senate plan on Saturday, and four Democrats — Mark Pryor of Arkansas, Kay Hagan of North Carolina, Mark Begich of Alaska and Max Baucus of Montana — also opposed it. All four are Red State Democrats up for re-election in 2014.

“The Senate has passed a budget,” Senator Patty Murray of Washington, the Senate Budget Committee chairwoman, declared at 4:56 a.m. Saturday.

The House plan ostensibly brings the government’s taxes and spending into balance by 2023 with cuts to domestic spending even below the automatic “sequestration” levels now roiling federal programs, and it orders significant changes to Medicare and the tax code.

The Senate plan, in contrast, includes $100 billion in upfront infrastructure spending to stimulate the economy and calls for special fast-track rules to overhaul the tax code and raise $975 billion over 10 years through legislation that could not be filibustered. Even with that tax increase and prescribed spending cuts, the Senate plan would leave the government with a $566 billion deficit in 10 years, and $5.2 trillion in additional debt over that time.

Rise in autism rate is up for debate
Saturday March 23, 2013, 12:02 AM
BY  MARY JO LAYTON
STAFF WRITER
The Record

When New Jersey reported one of the nation’s highest rates of autism last year — doubling in six years to one in 49 children — researchers described it as “beyond an emergency.”

But a federal study released this week indicated that the high rate appears to be the norm nationally. Autism spectrum disorder now affects one in every 50 children, well above the one in 88 previously reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“The good news is that the increase in autism isn’t special to New Jersey,” said Walter Zahorodny, an autism researcher at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. “The bad news is that it’s a significant increase and it’s registering everywhere.”

The findings released this week by the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration and the CDC are spurring debate: While experts attribute the increase to better reporting, it also suggests that the disorder is being diagnosed more frequently in children with milder symptoms.

According to the study, 1 million children nationally are diagnosed with autism, a complex disorder that affects brain development and a person’s ability to communicate, learn and form relationships.

Rep. Garrett Statement on Supporting the SKILLS Act keeping the Focus on jobs
Mar 15, 2013

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ) today issued the following statement after voting in favor of the SKILLS Act, H.R. 803:

“The American people work hard for their money and it’s not fair that Washington waste even a penny of it. The efficient and effective use of the American people’s tax dollars are among the most fundamental duties we have as their Representatives in Washington. Today, I joined my colleagues in the House to ensure that money spent on job training programs is spent wisely and on programs that work.”

Prior to passage, the House adopted the Garrett Amendment to the SKILLS Act. Rep. Garrett’s amendment would simply require that if reports evaluating programs under the SKILLS Act are not transmitted to Congress by the deadlines, the program’s authorization level would be cut by 10 percent as well as an additional 10 percent for each subsequent fiscal year until the report is received.

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

For Bea Kettlewood, mystery is the most important element in any medium of art. Visitors to her current show, “Doors, Windows, and the Weather” currently at the West Side Presbyterian Church can try their luck at uncovering the mysteries hidden in her 16 oil on canvas paintings, four watercolors and solitary silk screen.
The exhibit spans more than 40 years of observation from the artist’s travels throughout the United States.

“There is always a mystery of what is beyond the window or the door,” she says. It’s not a negative such as “stuck inside looking out” or “locked out looking in.” It’s about pondering with fascinating joy while wondering what is on the other side.

XXX_8350_1312825692_1-480x480

She describes her paintings as: “An open window with blowing curtains in the moving air; a door ajar with a hallway light inviting entry; a lighted lamp in the window suggesting warmth inside; an open door framing trees and flowers outside; an open barn door with unfamiliar objects inside creating speculation about use.”

Restaurant Review: Diwani in Ridgewood

Restaurant Review: Diwani in Ridgewood

FRIDAY MARCH 22, 2013, 7:29 AM
BY JULIA SEXTON
SPECIAL TO THE RECORD
THE RECORD

If your idea of an Indian restaurant includes color-saturated décor and an atmosphere that’s alive with the resonant drone of sitars, you might want to give Ridgewood’s modest Diwani a pass. Beyond the colorful East Ridgewood Avenue façade, you’ll find a bland foyer used to store chafing dishes for Diwani’s lunchtime buffet. Beyond that, the dining room offers one mirrored flank among beige walls that are only minimally punctuated by Indian portraits. But those don’t really matter. You’ll be hard-pressed to notice anything in Diwani beyond the massive widescreen TV that irradiates the narrow dining room with music-filled Bollywood-style videos — that is, unless the programming is hijacked (as it was during one of my visits) by a 30-minute infomercial advertising a very suspicious-looking erectile dysfunction treatment (much to the amusement of Diwani’s diners).

Readers have doubts about so called “experts”

Readers have doubts about so called “experts”

Why bother with experts? Mr. Grant has already stated on the record that the hospital needs to expand. Ms. Price is bending over backwards to make sure that the “experts” don’t have to stick around and answer questions the same night either. Finally, when the matter gets to the Council, Valley Auxiliary President Ms. Hauck is waiting there with her rubber stamp.

Can the decision makers at least try to maintain some APPEARANCE of objectivity?

Reader says its time to restructure Ridgewood Water

url

Reader says its time to restructure Ridgewood Water

This seems one of the things Village has been doing right lately (but sure wish it did more things right). It’s a public private partnership.

Some details here: https://www.ridgewoodnj.net/pdf/engineering/2012PRJTVentureWPCF.pdf

Rwd Water should be restructured into something like that – or perhaps sold entirely (though Village could retain a stake if so). Companies like United Water and Aqua America offer a variety of ways to partner — operating only, operation and renew infrastructure, billing and collection, or outright sale. Lots of possibilities.
