Readers Not Very Sympathetic to Ridge School Traffic Woes

Say wait till they build another 500 housing units in the middle of town

Solution= let the kids walk to school. Problem solved. When I grew up we walked to school. We did not need ‘helicopter parents’.

Have police start giving tickets to these parents and it will change.

I’ve got a great idea — lets build another 500 housing units in the middle of town so that we have more traffic past Ridge and all our schools every morning. Could someone suggest this please to the planning board and Village council. I bet no one has thought of that idea yet.

If they build new housing units, the taxpaying new residents will have just as much right to attend the school as your children. Chances are, since you have children in school you are also a new resident. So the last person to move here wants the door shut to others. So typical. Here’s a unique idea, let the kid WALK to school.

Same thing at the preschools, First Pres and the school in the church by stop and shop. The cars line up with no regard for the motorists who need to drive on the double yellow line to pass them.

It is the parents who create the safety problems. Their convenience is more important than the safety of the adults & children who travel these roads.

do you really expect a 4 year old to walk to preschool? Or for a parent to walk their kid there, 15 minutes each way, before getting on a train or driving to work? Cut them some slack for Christ’s sake. It’s common knowledge to avoid schools / bus routs certain times of the day. Take a different route! If you simply must go to S&S at that time of the day, go in the back way.

After 2nd grade, my kid’s walking. Maybe she’ll get a ride to a few blocks away as my wife heads out to work, but I can’t see getting dropped off at school…for the reason mentioned above.

Report: FBI investigating Rutgers whistleblower Eric Murdock

Report: FBI investigating Rutgers whistleblower Eric Murdock
By Eye on College Basketball staff | CBSSports.com
April 6, 2013 9:54 pm ET

The FBI is investigating whether Eric Murdock — the Rutgers assistant whose practice videos led to the ouster of Rutgers head coach Mike Rice and athletic director Tim Pernetti — tried to extort the university, according to a New York Times report.

The paper, citing two sources familiar with the investigation, said FBI agent James Tareco recently visited Pernetti’s office and other Rutgers locations as part of the probe.

A December letter written by Murdock’s attorney, demanding $950,000, was obtained by ESPN and released on Friday. The money was sought as a settlement of Murdock’s wrongful termination claims, the letter said.

“We are willing to give your clients until the close of business on Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, to address final resolution of this matter,” the letter said. “Otherwise, we have already prepared a Complaint and will file suit without further notice. To resolve claims for damages inclusive of attorney fees and costs, Mr. Murdock is willing to accept $950,000.00.”

Disappearing workers are the hidden jobless
Saturday April 6, 2013, 11:39 PM
BY PAUL WISEMAN AND JESSE WASHINGTON
Associated Press

WASHINGTON — After a full year of fruitless job hunting, Natasha Baebler just gave up.

She’d already abandoned hope of getting work in her field, working with the disabled. But she couldn’t land anything else, either — not even a job interview at a telephone call center.

Until she feels confident enough to send out résumés again, she’ll get by on food stamps and disability checks from Social Security and live with her parents in St. Louis.

“I’m not proud of it,” says Baebler, who is in her mid-30s and is blind. “The only way I’m able to sustain any semblance of self-preservation is to rely on government programs that I have no desire to be on.”

Baebler’s frustrating experience has become all too common nearly four years after the Great Recession ended: Many Americans are still so discouraged that they’ve given up on the job market.

Older Americans have retired early. Younger ones have enrolled in school. Others have suspended their job hunt until the employment landscape brightens. Some, like Baebler, are collecting disability checks.

Veterans reflect on anniversary of Iraq War

The Ridgewood News

Maria Bombace remembers well when the Iraq War started 10 years ago this March, before her son Matt was sent abroad.

She followed the news and “prayed and prayed” for service members, fearing chemical weapons would be used against them. The war initially seemed to be going “fast and well,” she noted.

“I see this anniversary as an opportunity to pause and reflect on the sacrifices our troops are called to make,” said Maria, a member of Ridgewood’s Gold Star Mother’s Day Committee, which honor fallen service members and their families.

Matt, who served two tours in Iraq between 2005 and 2008, regrets the mission was never completely accomplished. He compares the war to Vietnam. But like many others, he still would do it again.

16.2% Effective Youth Unemployment Rate

16.2% Effective Youth Unemployment Rate

Opportunities remain scarce for young people after years of debt-fueled government spending

Washington, DC – (4/5/13) – Generation Opportunity, a national, non-partisan organization advocating for Millennials ages 18-29, is announcing its Millennial Jobs Report for March 2013. The data is non-seasonally adjusted (NSA) and is specific to 18-29 year olds:

The youth unemployment rate for 18-29 year olds specifically for March 2013 is 11.7 percent (NSA).

The youth unemployment rate for 18-29 year old African-Americans for March 2013 is 20.1 percent (NSA); the youth unemployment rate for 18-29 year old Hispanics for March 2013 is 12.6 percent (NSA); and the youth unemployment rate for 18–29 year old women for March 2013 is 10 percent (NSA).

The declining labor force participation rate has created an additional 1.7 million young adults that are not counted as “unemployed” by the U.S. Department of Labor because they are not in the labor force, meaning that those young people have given up looking for work due to the lack of jobs.

If the labor force participation rate were factored into the 18-29 youth unemployment calculation, the actual 18-29-unemployment rate would rise to 16.2 percent (NSA).

Evan Feinberg, President of Generation Opportunity and one of the first Millennials to run for Congress, issued the following statement:

“March was another lost month for my generation. Young people are finding fewer opportunities and are being saddled with the costs of our country’s unsustainable deficits.

“Some people will try to blame the laughably small cuts to government spending known as the sequester – but aside from the Post Office, government actually added 9,000 jobs last month.

“After years of deficit spending and government meddling in the economy, 1 in 6 of us don’t have a job. Half of us are doing no better than a part-time job. All the while, we are all stuck with a bill that keeps getting bigger. It’s like we’re the last one to leave the bar and everybody else ran out without paying their tab.”

Obama budget looks to raid retirement accounts

Obama budget looks to raid retirement accounts
By Bernie Becker – 04/05/13 11:45 AM ET

President Obama’s budget, to be released next week, will limit how much wealthy individuals – like Mitt Romney – can keep in IRAs and other retirement accounts.

The proposal would save around $9 billion over a decade, a senior administration official said, while also bringing more fairness to the tax code.

The senior administration official said that wealthy taxpayers can currently “accumulate many millions of dollars in these accounts, substantially more than is needed to fund reasonable levels of retirement saving.”

Under the plan, a taxpayer’s tax-preferred retirement account, like an IRA, could not finance more than $205,000 per year of retirement – or right around $3 million this year

Tax Freedom Day® 2013 is April 18, Five Days Later Than Last Year

Tax Freedom Day® 2013 is April 18, Five Days Later Than Last Year
April 02, 2013
By William McBride,Kyle Pomerleau,Elizabeth Malm

What is Tax Freedom Day?

Tax Freedom Day is the day when the nation as a whole has earned enough money to pay its total tax bill for the year. A vivid, calendar based illustration of the cost of government, Tax Freedom Day divides all federal, state, and local taxes by the nation’s income. In 2013, Americans will pay $2.76 trillion in federal taxes and $1.45 trillion in state taxes, for a total tax bill of $4.22 trillion, or 29.4 percent of income. April 18 is 29.4 percent, or 108 days, into the year.

Why is Tax Freedom Day later this year?

Tax Freedom Day is five days later than last year, due mainly to the fiscal cliff deal that raised federal taxes on individual income and payroll. Additionally, the Affordable Care Act’s investment tax and excise tax went into effect. Finally, despite these tax increases, the economy is expected to continue its slow recovery, boosting profits, incomes, and tax revenues.

When is Tax Freedom Day if you include federal borrowing?

Since 2002, federal expenses have exceeded federal revenues, with the budget deficit exceeding $1 trillion annually from 2009 to 2012. In 2013, the deficit will come down slightly to $833 billion. If we include this annual federal borrowing, which represents future taxes owed, Tax Freedom Day would occur on May 9, 21 days later. The latest ever deficit-inclusive Tax Freedom Day occurred during World War II, on May 21, 1945.

When is my state’s Tax Freedom Day?

The total tax burden borne by residents of different states varies considerably, due to differing state tax policies and because of the steep progressivity of the federal tax system. This means higher income states celebrate Tax Freedom Day later: Connecticut (May 13), New York (May 6), and New Jersey (May 4). Residents of Mississippi will bear the lowest average tax burden in 2013, with Tax Freedom Day arriving for them on March 29. Also early are Louisiana (March 29) and Tennessee (April 2).

How has Tax Freedom Day changed over time?

The latest ever Tax Freedom Day was May 1, 2000 – meaning Americans paid 33.0 percent of their total income in taxes. A century earlier, in 1900, Americans paid only 5.9 percent of their income in taxes, meaning Tax Freedom Day came on January 22.

Who calculates Tax Freedom Day?

Tax Foundation economists calculate Tax Freedom Day using federal budget projections, data from the U.S. Census and the Bureau of Economic Analysis, and projections of state and local taxes. Tax Freedom Day was conceived in 1948 by Florida businessman Dallas Hostetler, who deeded the concept to the Tax Foundation when he retired in 1971. Tax Freedom Day by state has been calculated since 1990, when sufficient data became available. Learn more about Tax Freedom Day at www.TaxFoundation.org/taxfreedomday.

Fun Facts About Tax Freedom Day

Americans will work 25 days to pay their payroll, or social insurance, taxes—those taxes dedicated to funding social insurance programs such as Social Security and Medicare.

Americans will spend 14 days working to pay sales and excise taxes, 12 days to pay property taxes, and 7 days for other miscellaneous taxes (such as car taxes, severance taxes, and estate taxes).

Americans will spend more in taxes in 2013 than they will on food, clothing, and housing combined.

Individual income taxes represent the largest component of Americans’ tax bills. All but seven states levy a state income tax on top of the federal income tax. Paying these taxes together takes Americans about 40 days of work.

Multi-Agency School Response and Active Shooter Training

Multi-Agency School Response and Active Shooter Training
April 6th 2013
the Ridgewood Police

Ridgewood NJ, During school breaks in February and March of 2013, 80 officers from Ridgewood, Midland Park, Ho-Ho-Kus, Waldwick, Washington Twp., Bergen County Police and Upper Saddle River participated in multi-agency, multi-discipline active shooter training.

This cooperative shared services training program, involved training in Bomb/IED Awareness and Reality Based Simunitions scenarios in a school environment. Officers from the participating agencies trained together on room entries, threat identification, active threat response, and shoot/no shoot decision making as well as IED/Bomb threat identification and awareness.

These training sessions were conducted over 8 days in locations in Ridgewood & Midland Park. The training is a result of an ongoing coordinated effort by the area Police chiefs and departments to provide effective training for their personnel for critical incidents, in the face of new economic realities, to address emerging threats/challenges.

Additionally each department realizes that critical incidents such as potential active shooter situations will require multi-jurisdictional response/assistance. Therefore training opportunities such as these are critical for coordinated and effective responses to major incidents.

Last year Ridgewood coordinated its active shooter/Simunitions training with Glen Rock Police and members of Midland Park Police, conducting training in locations in both Ridgewood and Glen Rock.

This year we were able to expand our training efforts to include additional surrounding police departments. We look forward to integrating additional personnel into future training sessions.

I would like to thank the following chiefs and departments for their continued support and cooperation to ensure that each of our community’s police forces are better prepared to respond to and handle potential critical incidents within our various communities;

Chief Michael Marra & the Midland Park Police Department
Chief Brian Higgins & the Bergen County Police Department Bomb Squad
Chief Mark F. Messner & the Waldwick Police Department
Chief John Wannamaker & the Ho Ho Kus Police Department
Chief Randy Ciocco & Washington Twp. Police Department
Chief Frederick P. Stahman & the Glen Rock Police Department
Chief Patrick A. Rotella & the Upper Saddle River Police Department
The members of the Ridgewood Police Department

Chief John M. Ward

Have “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” finally picked a fight they can’t win?

The cast, which has brawled its way around North Jersey, may have picked the wrong town to wreak havoc in.

Three cast members, including star Jacqueline Laurita, will be charged with assault and terroristic threats stemming from an incident that took place at a clothing boutique grand opening in Ridgewood last Saturday night.

There have been plenty of rows filmed for Bravo’s hit reality show before, and they’ve occurred at very nice places, including Lu Nello in Cedar Grove (scene of Teresa Giudice’s infamous table-flipping incident), at the North Jersey Country Club in Wayne, The Manor in West Orange and Son Cubano in West New York.

Gauging Interest Chamber of Commerce’s proposal for construction and operation of at least one municipal parking garage in the Central Business District.

Candidate may write request for proposals in Ridgewood

Ridgewood officials have identified a candidate to draft a request for proposals (RFP) to develop Block 3703, Lot 12 of the municipal tax map, commonly referred to as The Gap parking lot on East Ridgewood Avenue.

The Village Council is expected to appoint Tom Calu Consultant LLC to complete the RFP for a $9,000 fee. A resolution to award the contract will be up for a vote at the April 10 council meeting.

gap_parking_theridgewoodblog.net

An RFP is needed to determine the level of interest that a developer might have in entering into a long-term land lease with the village and converting the lot into a commercial or retail building.

The request is considered the first of many steps in the Chamber of Commerce’s ambitious proposal to use proceeds and taxes from the lease to fund the construction and operation of at least one municipal parking garage in the Central Business District.

Members of Ridgewood’s business community and the Village Council have targeted space on Hudson Street as the location for a parking garage. If the land lease proves successful, a second parking garage will be considered, likely at the corner of Franklin and Walnut avenues.

Employment Picture remains weak , with little job growth in March
April 6th,2013
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, once again the U.S. job-creation was almost non existent in March as employers hired fewer workers than forecast and a shrinking labor force helped push the unemployment rate down to the lowest in four years.

Payrolls grew by only 88,000 workers, the smallest gain in nine months, and the jobless rate fell to 7.6 percent from 7.7 percent, Labor Department data reported.

Some of the weakness appeared due to higher tax rates that took effect in January.Recent reports have pointed to relatively buoyant retail sales in January and February, but Friday’s data showed retailers actually cut staff in March by 24,100, making it the hardest-hit sector last month.

Moreover, the government said hiring in the retail sector was weaker in January and February than initially thought.

It was unclear whether across-the-board federal budget cuts that began in March played a role in the weak pace of hiring, although nervousness over the cuts might have made businesses shy about taking on more staff , but the federal government shed 14,000 jobs in March, almost all of which were accounted for by the U.S. Postal Service.

The weak ” recovery ” has been the slowest since World War 2

People Not In Labor Force Soar By 663,000 To 90 Million, Labor Force Participation Rate At 1979 Levels

BLS
Bureau of Labor Statistics
Unemployment

Things just keep getting worse for the American worker, and by implication US economy, where as we have shown many times before, it pays just as well to sit back and collect disability and various welfare and entitlement checks, than to work .The best manifestation of this: the number of people not in the labor force which in March soared by a massive 663,000 to a record 90 million Americans who are no longer even looking for work. This was the biggest monthly increase in people dropping out of the labor force since January 2012, when the BLS did its census recast of the labor numbers. And even worse, the labor force participation rate plunged from an already abysmal 63.5% to 63.3% – the lowest since 1979! But at least it helped with the now painfully grotesque propaganda that the US unemployment rate is “improving.”
