Ridgewood NJ, the landscape of content moderation underwent significant changes in 2023, signaling the evolving dynamics of online platforms. Twitter, particularly under the influence of Elon Musk, broke content moderation norms, foreshadowing broader shifts in the industry. Major tech companies, including Meta Platforms Inc., Google, Amazon.com Inc., and Microsoft Corp., downsized their workforces amid economic challenges, impacting content moderation (Censorship) efforts. The trend toward utilizing artificial intelligence for moderation increased, with companies like Meta and Twitter embracing AI solutions.

However, this retrenchment also hindered independent monitoring, as companies pulled support for tools like CrowdTangle and imposed prohibitive costs for accessing data through APIs. In Europe, the Digital Services Act may provide a pathway for researchers, but challenges remain regarding access for civil society groups and journalists unaffiliated with universities.

As the tech industry heads into 2024, the stakes for content moderation (Censorship) are high, especially with numerous national elections globally. Whether tech companies will recommit to this work remains uncertain. Researchers and journalists are adapting to the current landscape, utilizing available tools and services to scrutinize platforms and address challenges, such as misinformation during events like the Israel-Hamas war.
